I trust nobody will be bothered by knowing the Waltons celebrated the end of WW II in this episode. This was really the focal point of this episode, and the scene where they rejoiced on hearing the news on radio was very well handled.
The two plots were good also. First was about Jason and Toni, back at Walton's Mountain. Toni was eager to get married before Jason was shipped out to the Pacific. Jason was afraid he'd be gone too long and change too much for them to be happy afterwards. Much of the show dealt with this conflict, which saw them stop fighting without truly deciding where to go.
Then we had Ben and one navy buddy being led out of their POW camp by a long Japanese soldier. They had no idea where they were being led or what was going to happen. If you haven't read the synopsis, I won't reveal as much as it does, but, I'm sure Waltons' fans would not be surprised to learn Ben is not killed, although it appeared that might happen.
I put myself in the living room when they all heard on the radio that the Japanese had surrendered and couldn't help but shed a tear, just as I imagine everyone around the country did when they heard the news. Earlier, we had seen the family learn about the atom bomb dropping on Hiroshima and their reactions to that huge news.
If you want to sum up the early years of the series, it was about a large family coping with the Depression. The later years were about them dealing with the realities of WW II. The entire series did a marvelous job of portraying so much of what Americans went through during those years and this episode is one we were waiting for from the time the series depicted America's entry into the war.
