Touching episode

Warning: Spoilers
Although this episode was sad I really enjoyed it.

I loved the theme of how everyone grieves differently.

The actress who played the widow Olivia is talented and believable.

The only thing that really bothered me is how everyone was getting aggravated with Olivia crying! Really!!?? She was just married the year before and recently widowed. John Walton basically wanted her to work and snap out if it. I get it that he wanted to distract her but the way he said it irked me and I love him.

Also I wanted to slap Mary Ellen when she told Elizabeth that "theres no use crying" when Calico died. OMG really!? The writer was off on that one.

Elizabeth was adorable as usual.. shes one of my favs and is an amazing little actress.

The Waltons is my favorite show. Great episode!

Not as good as its predecessor

I wanted give this episode 7 stars. But it contained one glaring fault, in my mind.

The Shivaree was the first appearance of Cousin Olivia, and that episode is one of my all time favorites.

The Loss, however, left me with a bland feeling. The main plot, with Cousin Olivia, was good enough.....though it did not have the punch of its predecessor.

Usually, each episode contains a main plot and a secondary one. In my opinion, this show works best when the two are equally impressive, AND when the secondary plot does not try too hard to copy the main plot. In the case of this episode, the secondary plot was way too obvious in its echoing the theme of the main plot. Also, as the secondary plot put little Elizabeth in the starring role (who is my least favorite Walton child), it left me cold.

Because the two plots were so much the same, it seems that the writer of this script took the easy way out. It made the entire episode too obvious, and too forced.

I would have given this episode 7 stars but for the lack of originality in the secondary plot.

I love this show to pieces! That's why it particularly pains me when an episode lets me down.

Totally Unwatchable

Warning: Spoilers
I avoid this episode when I can because I am not a fan of young Olivia. She was not appealing in Shivaree with Bruce and this time she's come back a widow. This is one character that they should not have had a return visit as nothing happens except her breaking down. In Shivaree you saw absolutely no affection or love between those 2 people so her loss wasn't believable. Bob gets so mad at being kidnapped, he spends his wedding night in a chair? I found The Loss one of the worst episodes in the first 5 seasons. After John Boy left the show, the writing was mediocre to plain bad.

Anyway now she comes back to bring all her bleakness and depression to the Waltons. Having her save the cat and kittens was just contrived. Found the whole episode unwatchable.
