- Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] There was one daily reality to our life on Waltons Mountain, and that was the Depression and our constant and continuing need for money. I count it remarkable that we, and others like us, were not totally defeated by hard times. The credit for that, of course, must go to our parents and their unique strengths, strengths that were tested almost daily.
- Esther Walton: [walks outside to find John and Olivia in each other's arms] What's going on out here?
- John Walton, Sr.: We're smooching, Ma.
- Esther Walton: In broad daylight?
- John Walton, Sr.: You've all done a real good job and I'm proud of you. We met our obligations and that should be satisfying. Maybe the best pay you ever get. These days, just having work to do can be a blessing. A father's obliged to talk to his sons like that now and again. Some kind of law.
- Elizabeth Walton: Is a typhoon a rich man?
- Jim-Bob Walton: That's dumb, Elizabeth.
- Elizabeth Walton: I'm talking to John-Boy,
- John-Boy Walton: Honey, a tycoon is a rich man. A typhoon is a big wind.
- Elizabeth Walton: I guess I'd rather be a tycoon. A lady tycoon.
- Jim-Bob Walton: I'd rather be Ty Cobb.
- John-Boy Walton: I'd rather be asleep.
