Is 'Jason' Going To Be A Part Of This Show?
ccthemovieman-119 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This was a rare occurrence: a character from the previous week being in this episode, too.....and it was not a two-part story. It's just that young "Jason" (Wright King) had followed "Josh Randall" (series star Steve McQueen)to a nearby town, still hoping to be his partner in the "bounty hunter" business.

Jason and Josh wind up in a big gunfight at a corral but Josh, as fans of this series know, is not a guy to have partners. He works alone, so what will happen to Josh? I don't know. It's left in the air at the end, but you know Josh isn't thrilled with the kid even though he's pretty good at what he does.

I see on the cast list here that fairly-famous movie actor Richard Farnsworth, billed here as "Dick Farnsworth" was in this episode but, frankly, I don't remember seeing or hearing him. He must have had a very small role.

The main thing is, at least for us viewers, that this is another well-written, well-acted episode. This series certainly has kept it's high standards as it slowly winds down in the Second Season. There would be one more year, a third, and then McQueen would go on to bigger and better things as big-time movie star. Meanwhile, he did himself proud cutting his teeth on this TV western.

Jason and Josh: change for Wanted?
ebertip24 June 2019
Are the producers testing the waters for a different Wanted? Jason wants the bounty on Billy Joe and disables Josh. Josh points out the difficulties in going after Billy Joe and his two brothers. The show has interesting parallels/contrasts. Josh and Panama both argue against needless killing. Jason and Billy Joe are for shooting it out. Billy Joe baits Jason by calling him Peach Fuzz.

Chump Move

Josh Randall hauls ass out of town from the previous episode in order to avoid Jason (Wright King). Jason is the incredibly annoying know-it-all wanna-be bounty hunter who expects Randall to teach him and split rewards with him (earn while you learn). Jason was the town deputy in the previous episode, until the Sheriff got killed, and Jason quickly took over.

Jason puts out a bogus Wanted poster on Randall, claiming he stole a horse. Randall gets arrested, and Jason catches up to him while Randall is in another town's jail. Now if that isn't the best reason to end any relationship before it started, what is?

As it happens, a trio of brothers are looking to get even with Randall for shooting another brother who had a bounty. So Randall teams up with Jason, who is all gung-ho about killing the brothers to get the bounty on them.

As usually happens in Westerns, all hell breaks loose, and then Randall is giving Jason some lessons on avoiding gun-play, which is pretty ridiculous coming from Randall.

If you have watched the entire series a few times, it seems like Steve McQueen liked to boss people around a bit. This TV series gave Steve McQueen the opportunity to learn acting while he was a young man. If you read about McQueen, it is easy to see that the character of Josh Randall was a lot like he was (or vice-versa). Maybe that is one reason why it was such a hit TV series.
