WHISPERING SMITH was western star Audie Murphy's attempt at headlining a series. Murphy plays a member of the Denver Police Force in the late 1860's. The series follows Murphy and his partner, Guy Mitchell, as they chase various unsavory types and bring them to justice. The series ran for 26 episodes between May and November 1961.

This one starts with outlaw James Best being brought into the Denver jail by lawman, Guy Mitchell. Best is wanted for the robbery of a large shipment of silver bars. The silver was not recovered. Best is locked in the cells for the night.
That night, Best manages to escape after fooling the rookie guard with a sick routine. He bolts up into the hill country to grab the silver he hid from the robbery. Audie Murphy is soon hot on the trail and collars him before Best can retrieve the loot.
Murphy takes Best to the nearest jail in a small one pony town where Sheriff Edward Platt is in charge. Also in the mix here is pretty Patricia Medina. Platt has the hots for Medina but needs cash to impress the woman. Of course we know where this is going.
Murphy is called to the cells that night by Platt. Platt says he had to kill Best when the man jumped him. Platt had used a shotgun and blew Best's face to bits. Murphy smells the old rat in the cheese cupboard. And needless to say he is right. Platt has made a deal with Best to let him free in exchange for the silver. The dead man was actually a deadbeat drifter from out of town. Murphy soon has the crooked lawman, the outlaw and the silver in hand.
Not a very good episode. The series so far has been rather poor for the most part.
