By the time these events occur, Mary Shelley's novel "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" had been in print almost continuously since 1818. Originally published anonymously, Shelley's name went on the second edition published in 1821. Although critics gave it a mixed reception, it proved enormously popular with the reading public. By the 1870s, it had been reprinted, translated into a variety of languages and adapted for the stage numerous times. The reanimation scenes depicted here, though, owe more to the movies of the 1930s and 1940s than the novel.
