Curious story for the series
searchanddestroy-116 March 2019
That episode belongs to the list of ones which look like more like a western than a fantasy, sci-fi tale. And the villains are also some kind of unusual too. A couple of villains which, at one moment, as shown like some kind of lead heroes of the story. That's my own opinion, and maybe you won't share it. Besides this, that's a good episode, and, as I told a couple of weeks ago, a one hundred épisodes series can't have all the same topics either.

Good Supporting Cast

Beverly Garland, later to play the mother of Laura Holt on "Remington Steel" and Mrs. King on "Scarecrow and Mrs. King," is the hostess of a salloon in a town everyone is fleeing.

Bradford Dillman, in a smooth performance, rides in with West on the stage and during a robbery handles himself masterfully with his knob-headed cane. A good supporing actor is only as good as his props. But is he a good guy or a bad guy? Guess.

But why is everyone leaving town?

Frankly, the secret isn't that great this time out. I only rank this episode so high because of the quality of the supporting players, including the Sheriff and the Mayor and Artie's turn as a piano player.

An all star cast

As they come into play in the episode, there's Bradford Dillman, then the great Jackie Coogan as (a useless) sheriff then Beverly Garland. Not to mention quite a few other great character actors. They all help with this true western tale of an episode without the sci fi, which some don't like about it, but I do. There is still mystery and twists and who might be good or bad.

An all round fun episode of Jim and Artie (who is also undercover as a saloon piano player in this) single handedly trying to save what's left of a small town called New Athens from the cutthroats in the title. A good old western shoot out at the end.

Not much out to say apparently this review is still too short. Not sure how. All I can say look out for a great piano joke in the finale.

Disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
*Spoiler/plot- TNOT Cut-Throats, 1967, West and Gordon see through a revenge plot, discovering it's a ploy to rob a town's main bank.

*Special Stars- Robert Conrad, Ross Martin, Jackie Coogan, Bradford Dillman, Walter Burke.

*Theme- Revenge is a powerful tonic if left unchecked.

*Trivia/location/goofs- Air date 11-17-67. Takes place in New Athens, Wyoming. Mr. Conrad's short stature/height for a leading man (5'7") was compensated for with shoe 'lifts' in his boots, casting short stunt people, and short leading ladies. In fact his show was known for needing so many short stature love-interest roles for women among females actresses, it became a staple for actresses in Hollywood.

*Emotion- I was entertained but not impressed by the 'revenge drama on a small town' plot line. It was done too many times in season three. And it always puts a extremely high bar on the guest star lead performances.....many time they fail to deliver enough to balance with Conrad and Martin. I have seen Dillman deliver better work in other TV series. Jackie Coogan/Uncle Fester was fun here. I would like to suggest another Jackie Coogan silent film with Charlie Chaplin, 'The Kid' and see his extensive acting 'chops'. He was more than a comedic actor. Coogan's bio on IMDb LINK: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001067/bio Also, there's not enough dire drama for a viewer to care much when compared to other episodes of W3. Many times the shows like this are disappointing. I thought this one was, unfortunately.
