Bubs commits to cleaning up, before the powers-that-be start an undercover operation.

This is a classic episode with great storytelling and one of the most suspenseful sequences of the show. There is no way you can watch it for the first time and not find out what comes next.

Many aspects of the Barksdale investigation start coming together and it feels quite rewarding as a viewer to see this happening. However, the command structure of the Baltimore PD continues to be portrayed in that inflexible, self-serving way that hinders progress and feels true to life in high-profile organisations.

The 'cost' of certain involvement in the game is felt by a number of characters in this episode, but I cannot really expand on this without spoiling what happens. It is safe to say that how certain events play out is in line with this theme and very well written.

Visually it is one of the all time best episodes of 'The Wire'. There is great cinematography, editing and use of sound throughout, but the final few minutes are unforgettable.

All performances are excellent as always.

Warning: Spoilers
Up until this point, by Brandon's tortuous murder a few episodes back, and Stinkum getting his chest blown away, and Keisha overdosing and being subsequently raped, it's no secret The Wire is a series that wasn't afraid to explore some incredibly dark and very real places. By "The Cost", arguably one of the best episodes of the season with possibly one of the best endings to any episode ever, we know stakes are high.

When Burrell whips up a plan to use Orlando and Greggs as a ploy to get ahold of Avon's drugs the seed of intensity settles in. When the man riding passenger with Orlando and Kima dips out and Orlando highlights how thugs intentionally turned the signs to mess with officers, tension raises even more. The Lincoln getting shot up was such a gut wrenching moment, and Greggs frantically fumbling for her gun was directed and shot to perfection, coupled with fantastic performances by Dominic West, Seth Gilliam, and Lance Reddick. The tension building during the entire sequence is fantastic, even the throbbing bass of Playa Haters by Black Star compliments this well and once the music cuts out and Kima calls out that something ain't right, everything goes south then some. Carver having an emotional breakdown was brutal to watch, especially when he had essentially called the tragedy in the scene before.

This is one of many masterpiece episodes in the series and it certainly isn't the last. Emotions run severely high, and with not a single note of original score. Bravo David Simon.

the cost, simply that

Warning: Spoilers
We have another lesson from Omar; after begin almost killed by Omar Avon says to Stringer that his advice was good advice so they will want to parley with Omar just waiting for the right moment to end with him. I as simple as Omar stops stealing from them and they cancel the bounty but Omar will find out that they are just waiting for that moment, Omar will be moving to NY. Other that is moving is Wallace, here he is picked up and he says pretty much everything to McNulty (except anything of what D'Angelo said to him, certainly D'Angelo was good with him) but most important is that Wallace puts Stringer in the murder of Omar's boyfriend. Now Wallace is going with his grandmother to the shore, practically he is out of the game and certainly that's the best thing that could happen to him.

This is one of those episode that leave you just extremely interested, when the credits start to roll you will be like "I really need to know what is going to happen…NOW". Fortunately I saw this Season on DVD and I will be seeing Season 2 on DVD also. But anyway, here again is the damn Deputy with his sort of trademark "BUY-BUST" so again is the detail doing things that nobody but the Deputy wants. Meet Orlando, he is arrested yet nobody is going to pay his bail, he will help the detail for their and his own good. S*** will go wrong

Perfect crima drama

Greetings from Lithuania.

Tenth episode of The Wire season 1 named The Cost was the closest thing to perfection in terms of crima dramas. It's nearly perfect writing, terrific acting and superb storytelling made this episode a standout so far in a great season 1. The pacing of this episode was at the highest order - there are a lot of things happening and it's of those shows and episodes were you better do a pause when going to the bathroom. The editing was also amazing and it's one of the things I overlooked in previous episodes - terrific editing gives the series a gritty look and feel.

Amazing episode in every way.

Warning: Spoilers
This was a bit of a slower episode. That is, of course, until the ending. The shootout was a really quite harrowing ending, and you just knew something was a bit off pretty much the whole time. This episode especially has made me realise that this show is really lacking a score. I'd definitely rather no score than a bad score, but with intense music to go with some of the scenes in this show, I think it would've made it so much better. Nonetheless, still another great episode
