This episode is typical of the brilliance of the whole of season one, combining a tight and believable story, plenty action and a further consolidation of the bond which is growing between Vinnie and Sonny, despite Vinnie's undercover role in the organisation which is intended to bring a man who's becoming his friend to justice. Through no fault of his own, Vinnie's cover is in serious danger of being blown. In the first confrontation he takes the initiative and walks out, only to be followed by Sonny who asks him to come back...Vinnie says "Keep me alive , Sonny.." and Sonny replies "We keep each other alive"...so painfully moving when you consider Vinnie's real purpose and how the story actually ends. Shortly after this, Sonny's suspicions are further aroused by some information from one of his men but he allows Vinnie to soothe these suspicions easily (mainly because he doesn't want to believe them.) It's interesting to note that this whole season (particularly the Steelgrave arc) has throughout it the theme of betrayal by a trusted friend and also the most popular episode of Miami Vice ("Evan") does. What did Dante say? That the hottest fires in Hell were reserved for those who'd betrayed a friend? So they should be.
