- Wishbone is Silas Marner; Joe has a new mountain bike that is absorbing his attention, causing him to neglect and fail to appreciate Wishbone.
- Wishbone is distressed with his owner Joe's infatuation with his new mountain bike, which causes Joe to pay less attention to Wishbone, and to act less caring and patient towards him. Then when Wishbone goes missing for a day, Joe realizes how much Wishbone means to him, and how his dog's company is so much more important than his new bike. Meanwhile, as Silas Marner, Wishbone learns the value of human warmth and companionship as opposed to acquired wealth. Another heartwarming and novel feature of this episode is the appearance and significant presence of an additional character, the colorful and memorable Hubert Lassatter. He --- like Joe with his new bicycle --- had sort of gotten "in a groove" that had made him almost "irritably focused" on one topic in his life, and which had largely prevented him from "seeing the whole picture" or enjoying life in its larger sense, not to mention caring for others. We could all learn some valuable lessons from both Joe and Hubert.
