- Dmitry: [after a practice session] It was beautiful, Natasha.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: Yeah, right. The vibrato was a mess, dad.
- Dmitry: I heard perfection.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: You always hear perfection. Mom?
- Yelena Tzetcovich: The vibrato was fine. What was all this arm at the end?
- Natasha Tzetcovich: I don't know. I just felt it.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: You just felt it? What are you now, Britney what's-her-name?
- Damon: She could do worse than be Britney what's-her-name.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: There, listen to my manager.
- Damon: All of you, just relax. We're gonna have an amazing show tonight.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: Yeah, "we". He just counts the receipts.
- Damon: Which will also be amazing, thanks to this talented young woman.
- Jack Malone: Quite the struggle.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Yeah. Looks like she was grabbed here, dropped the bow. No one on the stage saw her, so she must have been carried out through that emergency exit door there.
- Jack Malone: What about the alarm?
- Martin Fitzgerald: It was turned off. That's the door everyone uses to catch a smoke in the alley.
- Jack Malone: Mm.
- Martin Fitzgerald: We also found this backstage pass. There's no ID on it. The elastic band is torn, so it must have come off during the struggle.
- Jack Malone: Must have been an inside job. It's a pretty risky plan.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Oh, uh, one other thing: her violin's missing. A performer at her level, that violin's worth a hell of a lot of money, so maybe the perp was actually after the instrument, she put up a big fight, and he said "Heck with it. Let's grab her, too."
- Jack Malone: Well, let's hope it's not just about the violin. If it is, they have no need for her now.
- Danny Taylor: She just got a six-figure record deal for her first CD. She's got tour dates set up through 2005, and she's getting 15 grand per performance.
- Jack Malone: How many performances per year?
- Danny Taylor: About 30, sometimes more. It's all on her website.
- Jack Malone: They put how much she makes on her website?
- Danny Taylor: It makes her a pretty good target, huh?
- Jack Malone: We could be dealing with a stalker here. I think what we need to do is cross-reference the fans, the people who work backstage, and anybody who has access to the backstage area.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Okay, the backstage pass we found in her dressing room, it was forged.
- Jack Malone: Eh, it's a holographic image. Has to be the work of a pro. We should keep an eye for anyone that might have skills in graphic design. Uh, any news on the violin?
- Martin Fitzgerald: Oh, yeah. This baby's got quite a bit of history. The Amatti violin, nicknamed the Serafina, built in 1624, it's worth a quarter of a million bucks, and it was a gift from her first mentor.
- Jack Malone: It's probably doubled in value since it's been splattered all over the media.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Right. I've got calls in to some high-end violin dealers.
- Jack Malone: Any bites?
- Martin Fitzgerald: I'll tell you, there's a definite black market here, so I don't think it's gonna take long for some greedy soul to show up.
- Samantha Spade: So, you see... when a bullet goes into the thigh, it can lodge in the fascia. That's the, uh, connective tissue. Mine was a through-and-through, which means the bullet went...
- Dr. Lisa Harris: I know what it is.
- Samantha Spade: Okay. So, to answer your question, getting shot felt like very much like someone had taken a jackhammer to my leg. A burning hot jackhammer. And you're staring at me.
- Dr. Lisa Harris: Samantha... I asked you what it felt like to be shot, and you described, in quite some detail, the physical experience of being wounded. I'm interested in knowing how it felt in other ways.
- Samantha Spade: [trying to joke, as a means of deflection] Oh. Why didn't you say that?
- Dr. Lisa Harris: Samantha, you were brought here because you were a hostage in a kidnapping, during which you were shot in the leg with your own gun. You were assigned to desk duty, and as soon as you were allowed back on active, you shot and killed two suspects during an investigation.
- Samantha Spade: That was a good shooting.
- Dr. Lisa Harris: Yes, I read the report.
- Samantha Spade: There's a little girl, a violinist, who is missing. I'm sure you've heard. I could help her a lot more if I was out there doing my job.
- Dr. Lisa Harris: Right now, this is part of your job. And as our time is up, I won't keep you.
- [Sam stands to leave]
- Dr. Lisa Harris: I have you on for Thursday, 8:00 a.m.
- Samantha Spade: I can't do Thursday. But I'll call you.
- Samantha Spade: Sorry, I got held up with something.
- Jack Malone: How'd it go?
- Samantha Spade: Pointless.
- Jack Malone: [sarcastically deadpan] That's good.
- Samantha Spade: I spoke to our attaché in Moscow. He gave me some very interesting details on Natasha's father, Dmitry. Here we go. He was sentenced to 25 years in a Russian prison for racketeering. He only served two.
- Jack Malone: I doubt he got out for good behavior. He must have turned on somebody.
- Samantha Spade: Well, if that's the case, I'm sure he had enemies going in, he had a hell of a lot more coming out.
- Dmitry: Any news?
- Jack Malone: I should be asking you that.
- Dmitry: What are you talking about?
- Jack Malone: I just heard you on the phone asking someone to call you if they heard anything about your daughter.
- Dmitry: I do have some friends. It's not a crime to ask them for help, is it?
- Jack Malone: No, but it is a crime to impede a federal investigation. Are you being threatened?
- Dmitry: If I'd been threatened, I would have already taken care of it.
- Jack Malone: Oh, is that so?
- Dmitry: Yes.
- Jack Malone: Let me give you a little piece of advice. If I find that you have interfered with this investigation, or taken the law into your own hands, I will not hesitate to arrest you and your wife.
- Dmitry: You cannot do that in this country.
- Jack Malone: I wouldn't count on it. Now, I want you to come with me to my office. We'll have a little discussion about your potential enemies.
- Danny Taylor: This girl gets 10,000 hits a week on her website. I had no idea the violin was so popular.
- Danny Taylor: How's everything going on your end?
- Martin Fitzgerald: Good. I'm setting up a meeting with a violin dealer. I tell you, these guys run a very tight network.
- Danny Taylor: Mm-hmm.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Almost all of it's word of mouth. Anything good in the fan mail?
- Danny Taylor: Actually, these are from this one Russian guy. Listen to this. "I have been following your career since you were a little girl. I know every move you make when you play. It would mean so much for me to meet you."
- Martin Fitzgerald: That's creepy.
- Danny Taylor: Mm-hmm. Listen to this one. It's from four weeks ago. "I come to all of your concerts, but it is impossible to talk to you. I am desperate to meet you, Natasha. I will do what I can to make this happen."
- Martin Fitzgerald: That's even creepier. What do we got on this guy?
- Danny Taylor: His name's Ivan Breznev. He has a PO box in Brooklyn. I sent someone over there to see if I can get an address. Hopefully, I will.
- Vivian Johnson: [finding hidden drugs in Natasha's room] I take it you had no idea about these.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: No. What's that?
- Vivian Johnson: Drugs.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: What does this mean?
- Vivian Johnson: Where there are drugs, there's usually drug dealers.
- Damon: I love my son, but ever since his mom left, I just don't know how to handle him, and now to think that he's corrupted Natasha somehow...
- Samantha Spade: Where is he right now?
- Damon: He-He goes to school up in Vermont. I've been trying to reach him to tell him about Natasha.
- Samantha Spade: Did Shane have access backstage?
- Damon: Sure. But he wouldn't kidnap her, if that's what you're suggesting.
- Samantha Spade: What if his father told him he couldn't see her anymore?
- Samantha Spade: So, here's what I got. Apparently, Shane forged a note from his parents to get out of school, and nobody's seen him since 10:00 a.m. yesterday. Now, there's an 11:00 a.m. Greyhound that gets into the city at 4:30. That would have left him plenty of time to get to the concert hall.
- Jack Malone: He's got a credit card?
- Samantha Spade: Yeah, in his father's name. We're running it now. Get anything out of the dad?
- Jack Malone: Well, it turns out we were right. He rolled over on a couple of Mafia types in St. Petersburg. One happens to be his ex-business partner. Moved to New York a couple of months ago.
- Samantha Spade: Maybe his ex-partner's here to settle a score.
- Jack Malone: We're not gonna know until we find him. In the meantime, I want you to talk to Natasha's doctor, find out about those drugs.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: I think it's strange she would lie to me.
- Vivian Johnson: No, she's a teenager.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: If I would known about Shane, I never would have allowed it.
- Vivian Johnson: And that's why she lied to you.
- Dr. Shrindar: I would not have prescribed Oxycontin to her for any reason. Certainly not for acute anxiety.
- Samantha Spade: Anxiety?
- Dr. Shrindar: Her parents didn't tell you?
- Samantha Spade: Mmm, tell us what?
- Dr. Shrindar: That's what I was afraid of. She came in here about a week and a half ago with her boyfriend.
- [flashback sequence]
- Samantha Spade: Would her panic attacks have been triggered by a particular event, or... or a recent trauma?
- Dr. Shrindar: Not necessarily. It usually comes from an accumulation of stress over time.
- Samantha Spade: Right. And you didn't give her any medication at all?
- Dr. Shrindar: No, I wouldn't have done that without talking to her parents, and having her see a therapist.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: It feels like it's beating out of my chest, and I can't catch my breath all the time.
- Dr. Shrindar: Well, I can tell you there's nothing wrong with your heart, Natasha. What you're describing is a panic attack.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: So, what do I do about it?
- Dr. Shrindar: Tell me about these incidents. Do they happen at any particular time?
- Natasha Tzetcovich: Um... the first one happened a couple months ago, and that was before a concert. But now they seem to be happening all the time.
- Dr. Shrindar: Have you told your parents?
- Natasha Tzetcovich: No.
- Dr. Shrindar: Well, I think you should.
- Shane Whitmore: Right. Talk about panic attacks.
- Shane Whitmore: Can't you give her something? Xanax, Celexa, or something?
- Natasha Tzetcovich: Those are powerful drugs, and inappropriate at this time. My recommendation would be to cut down on your performing commitments.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: I can't do that.
- Dr. Shrindar: I can talk to your parents.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: No, don't do that. I can handle it.
- Shane Whitmore: You're a doctor. You have to keep this confidential. That's the law.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: Yeah, that's the law.
- Dr. Shrindar: Natasha, you're a minor. You're both minors. And I'm responsible for your care.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: Okay, but let me talk to them first. They're immigrants. They... they can't handle this stuff. Please.
- Dr. Lisa Harris: You wanted to ask me about Agent Spade?
- Jack Malone: Yeah, I get the impression that she may be resisting you a little.
- Dr. Lisa Harris: She's been resisting me a lot, actually. Having a hard time even getting her in the room.
- Jack Malone: You want me to talk to her?
- Dr. Lisa Harris: No. No, she'll come around.
- Jack Malone: What if she doesn't?
- Dr. Lisa Harris: They all do. Most of them.
- Danny Taylor: [bumping into Jack outside Dr. Harris' office] Not you, too.
- Jack Malone: No, but thanks for asking.
- Danny Taylor: We found her dad's old business partner. Yevgeny Putkin. No sign of Natasha, but we're still gonna bring him in.
- [handing Jack a folder]
- Danny Taylor: You're gonna find this interesting.
- Jack Malone: [giving the file a once-over] Secret Service, huh?
- Martin Fitzgerald: [overhearing Viv on the phone] Everything all right?
- Vivian Johnson: [tersely] Uh-huh.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Care to talk about it?
- Vivian Johnson: It's Reggie. It's like every year, it gets harder. What, with the acting out, the talking back. Last week, he called me a bitch.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Uh-oh. What'd you do?
- Vivian Johnson: I almost hit him. I don't know what to do.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Not that it's any consolation, imagine how much harder it would be if he was making a million bucks a year.
- Vivian Johnson: Harder on him or harder on me?
- Martin Fitzgerald: Good question.
- Martin Fitzgerald: [watching a witness with a sketch artist] He said the guy had a Russian accent and a beard and a leather jacket.
- Jack Malone: Well, that describes about half the male population of Brighton Beach.
- Vivian Johnson: If I have to look at one more bearded, 40ish, scary-looking Russian guy, I'm gonna blow my brains out.
- Jack Malone: Yeah, I know.
- Vivian Johnson: How'd you learn to speak Russian, anyhow?
- Jack Malone: A busboy at the Russian Tea Room.
- Vivian Johnson: Hmm. Learn something new about you every day.
- Jack Malone: Yeah, I know. It's a lot of fun, isn't it?
- Danny Taylor: Check this out. Our tech found this buried in the hard drive of Natasha's computer. It's from that guy that keeps stalking her, Ivan Breznev?
- Vivian Johnson: That's Yelena.
- Danny Taylor: Mm-hmm. That has to be Natasha, right? There's Dmitry in the background. There's a message in Russian.
- Jack Malone: It says "look closely."
- Danny Taylor: Now, imagine him with a beard.
- Vivian Johnson: This is the man who's been stalking her. He's been going by the name of Ivan Breznev.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: [recognizing him] I thought he was dead.
- Vivian Johnson: Who is he?
- Yelena Tzetcovich: His name is Aleksander Denisovich. He is Natasha's real father.
- Jack Malone: You know what? I don't have time to screw around anymore. You either tell me everything you know about Aleksander, or I'm gonna charge you as an accessory to kidnapping, and you're gonna get a taste of what American prison's like.
- Aleksander Denisovich: He only wants to see his daughter, okay? He wanted to see her, asked me for the pass. I did it for him for old times' sake. And 300 bucks.
- Jack Malone: Was that the friends and family rate? I'd like an address, please.
- Aleksander Denisovich: Klantic Avenue, 25th Street.
- Martin Fitzgerald: All right, well, the apartment didn't tell us much. Couple of old shirts in the closet, coffee maker on the table, no plane tickets, no bus schedules, no receipts.
- Danny Taylor: Isn't it so much easier when they leave the Amtrak schedule right on the coffee table, and they've gone as far as circling the getaway train in bright red ink?
- Samantha Spade: Okay, that was Damon Whitmore. He's at the hospital. He went to get a cup of coffee, Shane grabbed his keys, took off.
- Vivian Johnson: When?
- Samantha Spade: Five minutes ago.
- Vivian Johnson: Maybe Natasha somehow got in contact with him.
- Samantha Spade: That kid doesn't even know how to drive, Viv.
- Vivian Johnson: They were dreaming of going to Mexico, right? Well, now they've got the money.
- Samantha Spade: I'll call the airports.
- Vivian Johnson: Mm-mm. She doesn't have her passport, but I bet they were planning on driving.
- Samantha Spade: Driving to Mexico? Come on.
- Vivian Johnson: Do you know what you put your parents through?
- Natasha Tzetcovich: Why don't you people just leave me alone?
- Vivian Johnson: Because we care about you. Your parents care about you. Don't give up on them, Natasha.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: What?
- Vivian Johnson: I know they seem as if they're out of touch. I've met them, and they kind of are. But they love you, and that's a lot. Give them a chance.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: I have.
- Vivian Johnson: Give them another one.
- Natasha Tzetcovich: I can't.
- Vivian Johnson: You can.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: You know, I keep wondering... why Natasha didn't tell us Aleksander has contacted her. Why?
- Vivian Johnson: Maybe she thought you lied to her. I think it's kind of a rebellion.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: Rebellion against what? We tried so hard to make her life normal.
- Vivian Johnson: I don't think there's a single teenager out there that thinks their family's normal, and the more you try and make it seem that way, the more she thinks she's going nuts.
- Yelena Tzetcovich: Still doesn't explain... why she runs off with this crazy boy.
- Vivian Johnson: Running off with a boy that no one wants you to be with?
- Aleksander Denisovich: [admitting he kidnapped Natasha] That was no life for her like that. I was only trying to save her.
- Danny Taylor: Exactly how long ago did she run away from you?
- Aleksander Denisovich: M-m-maybe 30 minutes. I've been everywhere in the neighborhood, and-and I don't know where she is.
- Danny Taylor: What was she wearing?
- Aleksander Denisovich: Um, an old blue shirt of mine and, uh, some jeans I bought for her.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Does she have any money on her?
- Aleksander Denisovich: She took what I made from the violion; $100,000.
- Martin Fitzgerald: Oh, you got ripped off, my friend.
