Learning that Dad is Just a Man
Tarasicodissa12 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
There comes a time when you see your parents as the rest of the world sees them.

This was an incredibly touching episode.

Kevin had always wondered why his Dad came home grumpy from work. Now, after a day watching his father at work he learns that...

1. His father is a shipping manager.

2. It is a high pressure job.

3. When anything is late for any reason (even because a subordinate disobeyed his instructions) he is reamed out by his boss.

4. So he only gets negative recognition.

The soundtrack of the episode is the Beatles' "Blackbird" which beautifully conveys the crushed hopes of a trapped man.

Kevin sees how disappointed in his life his father is. It is very awkward to be put in the position of feeling sorry for a parent. And he realizes how deeply his father needs his family.

This, quite simply, is a brilliant episode of a brilliant show, that sees Kevin learn more about his Dad.

Beautifully written and performed.

Brings it all back from 1989

I vividly remember this episode from when it was first broadcast in 1989 (UK), and specifically when Jack's boss shouts at him. That scene took me back around 35 years in a heartbeat.

I'm going through a rewatch of The Wonder Years, after getting the full boxset a few years ago and never taking the time to do it, so that time is now.

The poignancy, nostalgia and memories these programs have a pull that is almost irresistible; watching from 1989-1993 at a time which was then set 20 years before, and now realising that we are now 35 years past those original viewings. Time waits for no man, but the speed it travels leaves me dumbfounded.

I'm looking forward to the rewatch.
