Schizogeny is the localized separation of plant cells to form a cavity (surrounded by the intact cells) in which secretions accumulate (such as resin canals).
The two songs heard on the soundtrack, "Hands of Death (Burn Baby Burn)" by Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper, and "Deep" by Danzig, are both from the 1996 compilation called "Songs in the Key of X: Music from and Inspired by The X-Files." The album contained a mixture of songs that were either featured in the series or shared thematic elements with it. The song "Hands of Death (Burn Baby Burn)" received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1997, losing to Rage Against the Machine. The song "Deep" was specially made for the compilation album because Glenn Danzig, the former lead member of The Misfits, is a huge fan of The X-Files. Another notable song on the compilation album is "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave, which played on the radio in the car that unhinged Duane Barry used in Ascension (1994) to take abducted Scully to the Skyland Mountain.
The cast and crew nicknamed this as The Killer Tree Episode.
In one scene Mulder originally said "dickweed," but it got censored to say "dorkweed."
Katharine Isabelle (Lisa) is the daughter of the show's producer Graeme Murray. She later became a minor horror icon thanks primarily to Ginger Snaps (2000) and its sequels. Her brother Joshua Murray played an uncredited role of Red Museum Church Member in Red Museum (1994).
