Awesome Season One

Season One - wow so 90s

This cartoon was more mature than what I remember but also so true to the comics.

Once I got over the nostalgic feeling of the first couple of episodes I really got suckled back into how good a cartoon this really is.

Story telling at its best and always with a hidden meaning, it's okay yo be different. Years ahead of its time.

Emphatic. Jealousy, friendship and team ethics all rolled into one.

The build up to the last 3 episodes is awesome.

Already enjoying the beginning of season 2 Get involved- you won't regret it.

Great closure to a great season and many open questions...

Warning: Spoilers
Great season finale! 9/10 (It's not as fantastic as the Days of Future Past) but nonetheless great.

Lot of action and good storytelling here. The episode closed off some stories lines, but also left enough questions open for future episodes: What happens in the future of Bishop, Forge and old Logan?

Great season finale It's not as fantastic as the Days of Future Past but nonetheless great. Lot of action and good storytelling here. The episode was a good season finale that closed off some stories lines, but also left enough open for future season.

Many characters and storylines are still open. But considering you don't know the comics, the following questions could be open...

*What happens with the future of Bishop, Forge and old Logan? Will Bishop be back again?

*Can we expect more sentinels, there was Nimrod in the future...

*What will Apocalypse do next?

*Who is Mystique really, and what is that relationship with Rogue about?

*When will the Juggernaut reappear and what is this anger towards his brother Xavier about?

*Is doctor Bolivar still alive?

*What will senator Kelly do onwards, will he become president and change?

*Will Henry Peter Gyrich be back?

*Who are the people we have seen in the flashbacks of Gambit and Wolverine.

*Will we see the Morlocks and the other cameos in the season like Northstar and Sunsfire?

*Will Beast rejoin the team, he is not part of the end sequence in the intro?

*Who are the the two villains in the intro song at the end?

*Who is this Cable guy with that big gun?

*Who was that man on the end mentioned: Sinister...

Total Season Review

Warning: Spoilers
This is super impressive all and all.

With X-Men there is so many characters. Wolverine, a lone solder whose biggest enemy is himself. He has to learn how solitude his brothers in arms are there to support him, he has to learn the threats of the world are fought together, even the small battles fought to defend Canadian villages. There is Beast, the scariest and hairiest, but an intellect and wisdom far greater and more vast than many people. Storm an Egyptian weapon, used and abused and damaged, but loving, wise, and brave. Rouge, Gambit, Cyclops, Colossus, Jubilee, Professor X all with well realized character strength and weaknesses and traits. Only Jean Grey is kind of lacking. But with a list of 8 other solidly developed characters, and a season run time of 13, 20 minutes episodes, one character lacking is a massive win. Plus Jean has her own super iconic story, she'll undoubtedly have her time to shine.

On top of the great character work, there are some very rich stories told. It doesn't hold back with some of the stuff either. Characters are enslaved, manipulated, traitorous, killed, morally challenged. Villains and antagonists like Sabertooth, Magneto, Apocalypse, Senator Kelly, Mystique, Sentinels, Juggernaut. It's just jam packed with awesome portrayals of every thing.

Even the direction and the action is amazing. Super dated, but this is probably the first time visualizing Telekinesis and magnetos magnetism. For a children to easily understand, and little to no other examples, what we have is super understandable and serviceable. But out side of those two shaky power set visuals, there's cyclops' beams, storms powers, wolverines claws, jubilee's... sparks, gambit's powers. Some fight scenes are super creative too. The last episode Wolverine is fighting a sentinel in a cave, and they visualize that really well.

The is super creative, well written, heartfelt, interesting, fun, and polished, even down to the voice work something also probably never done before, but judging by how all other iterations of these characters in even modern day resemble the characters we see here in the first season, it all points to what a fantastic job was done.

Season One Review

One of the potential gems of the Disney Plus service was the chance to rewatch the classic Animated X-men series that aired when I was younger and though I had seen, didn't religiously watch all the way through.

Through the eyes of a young mutant named Jubilee (Alyson Court) we're introduced to the X-Men. A team of mutants with special powers that fight for good and to try and earn the acceptance of regular humans, who see them as dangerous. This idea is reinforced by a number of evil mutants, who exploit their powers for criminal ends. However, the humans are just as capable of cruelty and prejudice and amongst other exploitations create giant robots known as sentinels, who mercilessly detect and hunt the mutants.

The reputation for this series is high and that theme song certainly kicks off each episode in high gear. That said, I couldn't help but feel that the first season was . . . . passable, but that's about it. Animation wise, it's very much of its time. It's not bad, exactly, but there are a great number of corners cut to make things faster and cheaper. Supporting character in a scene, for example, can all look the same or be wearing the same clothes. There are some wild inconsistencies in the size of the Sentinels and occasionally the X-men change clothes in between scenes even when it wouldn't make sense to do so. The trivia section for the show does make mention of the fact that there were issues with the animation team in Korea, so some of these mistakes might be less prevalent in later seasons (I'll let you know).

Storyline wise it's pretty good though. The occasional one offs can be a bit meh, but the show works as an overall narrative too, with these smaller arcs inside it. So this first season introduces Trask and the Sentinals, Magneto (but not the brotherhood yet), Apocalypse and then the Days of Future Past storyline.

It's decent, don't get me wrong - but based on this first run, at the moment I'd say that there's some rosey tints to the reviews.

Not bad as far as the show goes

Warning: Spoilers
The problem is that Bishop is really, really stupid. His amnesia feels unnecessary and is mostly there to create drama. The Pyro/Avalanche duo is starting to get really grating. Mystique doing the assassination under the guise of someone else is actually cool, I wish they movie had done it. Also apparently Rogue is Mystique's daughter, wtf? The Sentinels go full Skynet. Kinda sucks that the whole thing is reduced to simplistic "rise of the machines". Magnito comes to help the X-Men for the first time, which is nice. Overall the first season has been a disappointment, a few episodes were good but most of them were bland and forgettable.

The Final Decision.
bombersflyup22 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
In The Final Decision, Senator Kelly has been abducted by Magneto and given the facts about Magneto's goals of superiority of mutants over humans, the X-men's beliefs of peaceful co-existence between both races and the Sentinel's plans of global domination.

There's been a mistake in the programming, that the X-Men are indeed human and the Sentinel's take over. The sentinels fall all too easy, left and right like flies though, with Magneto and the Professor coming together for the greater good, making the dramatic scene earlier about a suicide mission rather ridiculous. The first season a whole has been watchable, but disappointing the same.
