One of my favorite episodes
bensonmum29 March 2006
Not having seen "A Day in the Life" since it initially aired in 1997, I was happy to finally see it again recently as I waded through the Season 2 DVD set. Looking around the internet, this episode appears to be either one of the most loved or most hated episodes depending on which side of the fence you fall. There's not much middle ground. I would place somewhere in my top five favorite episodes. Before "A Day in the Life", I caught Xena from time to time, but it was no big deal. This is the episode that made me one of those can't-wait-until-Sunday-night-for-the-new-episode kind of fans.

"A Day in the Life" stands out as being unusual when compared with most of the other Xena episodes. The action and fighting are relegated to a sub-plot. As the name implies, "A Day in the Life" focuses on the everyday lives of Xena and Gabrielle. Everyday tasks like sleeping, cooking, and even going to the bathroom take center stage. To give it a more natural look, hand held camera are used to get that reality TV look. Little things like Gabrielle fussing about a bent frying pan or Xena and Gabrielle kicking each other as they walk down a path or Xena catching fish for a meal make you feel like you've gotten some insight to what makes these characters tick. It's different, it's funny, and it's one of my favorites.

Xena: Documentary Style.
Son_of_Mansfield5 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A series of title cards flash across the screen as a typical day is played out in the life of Xena and Gabrielle. They protect two villages, fly a kite, kill a giant, smack a warlord, help their new friend Minya win her Xena smitten boyfriend with a whip and some leather, splash water at each other, and debate what clothing choice would best take care of Xena's nagging smit problems. After Xena's first death, and first rebirth, comes one of the better comedic episodes of the series. Both Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor have a real gift for comedy. The scene where Xena throws a couple of fish at Gabrielle's head with a huge grin on her face is the best. Playing a typical "Xena" situation for laughs pays off and would become a staple of the show.

Xena: I could stop bathing and wear smelly bear skins. That would turn them off. Gabrielle: True, but you would also be traveling alone.

Salute to Xena - A 25th Anniversary Review
skullface20206 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What's a day in the life like for Xena and Gabrielle? Turns out that our favorite Warrior Princess and Amazon Queen are botha little ordinary and extraordinary at the same time.

SYNOPSIS

Waking Up - Our duo often wakes up when attacked by a group of soldiers or thieves. Today their sleep in the woods is interrupted by soldiers loyal to the warlord Zagreas. They wanted to keep Xena from interrupting his attack on a nearby village, but of course they failed. Xena damaged their only frying pan over some guy's head, and Gabrielle is not too pleased.

Finding Your Way - Traveling to save this village becomes a bit of a challenge, and the duo might be lost. Fortunately, some dude shows up on the path and they ask him for directions. He's Hower, and he's actually from another village that needs help since it can no longer afford protection money owed to a violent giant. Should they go help his village or the village that Zagreas is planning on attacking?

Making a Decision - Gabrielle states that they must determine which village to protect by calculating how many innocent people they can help. Xena has an easier way; she flips a coin. It's off to save Hower's village form the giant.

Treaveling - Xena and Gabrielle play a game in order to pass the time traveling: use clues to guess the identity of a person that Xena is thinking about. The first clue is that she killed him, and it looks like this game will take the entire episode. Stopping for brunch, Xena asks Gabrielle and Hower what type of seafood they want her to catch out of a little pond. Xena can fish using her bare hands, and it looks like Hower is developing quite the crush on her.

A Call from Nature - Xena has to use the lady's room. However, Gabrielle finds out that Xena couldn't find a good leaf and instead used a piece of her parchment that she uses for her stories! The broken pan and now this, wow.

Giving Directions - They arrive at Hower's village, but all of the residents have fled into hiding. An exception is Minya, Hower's girlfriend. Minya is super inspired by Xena, and has probably been a fan for a long time. She knows all the Xena stories. Upon questioning, Xena informs Minya that she doesn't yet have a complete plan to defeat the giant that will attack shortly. She instructs Minya to get all the village's mirrors out since maybe they'll use the same approach that she used to kill Goliath (season 2 episode 3). Xena tells Hower to take to the road and give Zagreas a message: Xena doesn't care that you attack that other village, but just don't come to this village. It is now bath time for Xena and Gabrielle.

Practice Makes Perfect - Getting ready for the giant Gareth also requires dealing with the the drama that's unfolding in the village. Xena makes it very clear to Hower that she's not into him, but he seems a bit confused. Gabrielle really can't get too far convincing him either. Minya is clearly becoming upset about the situation, and Xena tells Hower that he's got a great girlfriend and he'd be a fool to lose her.

Trial and Error - Minya dresses up as Xena, and it's pretty cool. Furthermore, Zagreas shows up in town. He's a mess and it seems as though his army was totally crushed by the giant Gareth. Xena's plan was to lure him to this village out of curiosity and then have him destroyed by the giant, and the plan worked perfectly. He gets knocked out and now it's time to get Gareth.

Waiting for Gareth - Xena invents a string and framed cloth thing that we now call a kite, and she plans to use it to bring to power of Zeus down and kill Gareth. This plan is a bit confusing to Gabrielle, and they have a challenging time practicing with the kite. This mission is personal since it was Gareth that killed the family of Goliath who had been Xena's long time friend. Seeking revenge was what took Goliath over the edge. Gareth shows up, and Xena jumps out of a tree at him. She runs and he chases, but he doesn't know that she attached the kite to his back. Storm clouds roll in, and zap - he's dead!

Going to Bed - It's back to sleeping under the starts for our heroic duo. Today was just another day in the life.

NOTES

Every day is a chance for Xena and Gabrielle to help others. This episode was very unique and a nice illustration of how life is for two brave friends dedicated to using their strength and creativity to make the world a better place.

Enter: Hower, Minya, Gareth, Zagreas

This Xena episode is so different, it's great! Like most people I was attracted to Xena for all the action! And when I saw this episode for the first time, I hated it, because lack there of! But after the demise of -THE GREATEST TELEVISION SUPER HERO- and now 2006 buying all the DVD's, I found myself loving this episode! For me this episode shows Xena and Gabby to be more than just characters, they start to feel real! And so now it's officially apart of my top 5! The complete list, 1.ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE PT. 1,2, 2. THE IDES OF MARCH, 3.SEEDS OF FAITH, 4. AMPHIPOLISE UNDER SIEGE and 5. A DAY IN THE LIFE! True Xena fans who hate this episode, it deserves a second look!

A Day in the Life
Prismark1025 February 2021
I can see why this is episode is a fan favorite.

It is campy fun with a lot of in jokes inspired by fan feedback when the series was first being shown.

Especially with the various subtexts regarding Xena and Gabrielle's relationship. Well they are having a bath together and a comment is made about where the soap has got to.

It really is how Xena and Gabrielle spend time together in between their adventures and as they travel to their missions.

Fishing for food, cooking when the saucepan is damaged, bathing and doing your business when the quality of leaves is not as good to wipe away the muck.

A villager requests Xena's help as they are being terrorised by a giant. As per usual the villager falls for Xena which leaves his girlfriend unimpressed although she also had the hots for Xena as well.

A risque laden adventure.
