Villagers lie dead in a field. Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) walk through them. Michael (Charles Mesure) appears. Xena draws her sword, not trusting Michael. She asks who killed the villagers and he informs her it was Caligula (Alexis Arquette). Xena looks at Gabrielle and then to Michael and Michael and can tell Xena has heard of him. Xena says he's a psycho, a sex addict and a murder - typical for the emperor of Rome. Michael tells them he is a god, but he doesnt know how it happened. Michael says that since Xena has the power to kill gods, she will need to kill him. He tells her that he's killing followers of Eli and Xena warns him that nothing better happen to Eve (Adrienne Wilkinson) because she can kill angels too.
In a Rome square, Caligula rides in on a chariot, dragging two bodies behind him. He laughs. He gets down and sighs. He moves over to a Priest and gestures for the Captain to hand the Priest his sword, which he does. Caligula holds open his red toga to expose his stomach. The Priest stabs him and then removes the sword. There is no blood. The Priest kisses Caligula's ring. Caligula moves before an old man, and hold out his ring. The old man will not kiss it. Roman soldiers grab him. Eve steps up before Caligula. Roman soldiers grab her too. Eve orders them to let the man go. Caligula mocks her for who she is now and that he wishes he saw her when she was the Bitch of Rome. She replies, "Now I'm the bitch for Rome and her people." She warns him that his days of tyranny are over. He yawns and replies that he likes to kill Elijans because its the only way to shut them up. The soldiers laugh. Xena rides in, in a chariot. She wears a golden helmet and black outfit with a flowing cape. The soldiers run at Xena, releasing Eve and the old man. Gabrielle runs over to Eve and leads her away. Xena raises her sword and takes out the Romans as her chariot flies by. Ares arrives and watches Xena. Xena stops the horses and flips from the chariot. She lands before Caligula and draws a dagger. Ares (Kevin Smith) body slams into Xena and tells Xena that if she kills Caligula, she'll kill Aphrodite (Alexandra Tydings). Aphrodite appears, lying on a bed. Ares tells Xena that Aphrodite and Caligula's lives are bound together and that to kill Caligula is to kill Aphrodite.
ACT ONE
Gabrielle runs with Eve. They slow down and walk. Eve tells Gabrielle that she shouldn't be here because this is her mission. Gabrielle reminds her that Xenas mission is to protect her. She tells Eve to go to the catacombs where the Elijans are hiding and that they will join her later. Eve leaves. Gabrielle heads back.
Romans pick up Xena and Ares and bring them before Caligula. He chuckles. Aphrodite moves over to Ares and runs her hands over him. Ares isnt happy about Aphrodite fondling him. Caligula pulls her back. Caligula orders the soldiers to take Ares and Eve to jail. A soldier informs him that Eve escaped. He demands that she is found. Aphrodite is bored. He kisses her. Aphrodite passes out and servants come over and take her away. Gabrielle enters when Caligula turns on Xena and tells him that Xena is Saba, the great charioteer and that she challenges him to a chariot race. Caligula says it could be entertaining. He smacks Xena's behind and she gasps. He leads her away.
Inside the place, Xena and Gabrielle are in a bath. Xena washes Gabrielle's feet. Xena says they need to stop Caligula from killing Eve. Gabrielle says shes safe with the Elijans, but Xena doesnt trust her to stay there. Xena gets out and drapes a towel around herself. Gabrielle says they need to stop Caligula without hurting Aphrodite. Xena replies that they need to figure out the bond between them and break it. Xena says to talk sense into Aphrodite at the party, while she goes to the dungeon to talk to Ares.
At the party, Gabrielle enters and moves over to Aphrodite, but she doesnt remember her. Aphrodite stands and stumbles away as those drunk. Gabrielle follows her. Aphrodite grabs Gabrielle and slowly, gently, backs her into a wall. She kisses Gabrielle on the lips. Gabrielle pushes her back. Aphrodite laughs. Another woman takes Aphrodite's place beside Caligula, who did not see her leave. He looks over and then stands when he sees Aphrodite is not there. Caligula finds and joins Aphrodite and Gabrielle. The servants lead Aphrodite away, who waves to Gabrielle. Caligula moves over to Gabrielle and asks where Saba is. He orders the Praetorian guards to find Xena and kill her.
Ares is in the dungeon. Xena enters. Xena asks him whats wrong with Aphrodite. Ares says he came to Rome because he heard Aphrodite was losing her mind. He tells Xena that without a God of War, the Goddess of Love becomes unbalanced.
The servants help Aphrodite sit down. Caligula enters with Gabrielle. Gabrielle tells Caligula she is going to give a performance.
In the dungeon, Xena asks what Caligula has to do with Aphrodite becoming unbalanced. Ares tells her that Caligula is sucking Aphrodite's godhood bit by bit. Xena says she needs to come between Aphrodite and Caligula before he becomes a full god and she leaves.
Gabrielle dances for Caligula. Xena enters and watches Caligula with Aphrodite. Caligula runs his hands over Aphrodite's eyes and she falls asleep. Gabrielle finishes her dance. Caligula claps and everyone else joins in. Xena comes up behind Gabrielle, who informs Xena that Aphrodite doesn't recognize them. Caligula sees Xena and moves over to her. Gabrielle removes Xena's cape, to reveal her wearing skimpy lingerie. Xena says she is Caligulas to command. He looks her over. Caligula says that Xena needs to prove herself worthy of being able to race him. Ares is brought in and Caligula orders her to kill him.
ACT TWO
Xena brings Gabrielle over to Ares. They move their hands over Ares. Xena invites Caligula over, but he chooses to watch, lying down next to Aphrodite. Xena moves over to him and removes her helmet. She leans in and kisses him, then bites his lip. She moves back over to Ares. Xena and Gabrielle move their hands over Ares. Caligula's lip is bleeding. Caligula sees blood on his hand. Caligula touches his bleeding lip. He leaps up and orders Xena placed in chains, and she is. Aphrodite asks him not to make them leave and he slaps her. He orders everyone out and they run out, women screaming. Caligula orders a guard to stab him with his dagger. The guard does. There is no wound on Caligula. He shoves the guard and laughs. He is still immortal. He looks at Xena who is smiling and then touches his bloody lip.
Aphrodite has a cut on her forehead which she looks at in a hand mirror. Gabrielle is with her. Aphrodite says she's going to die. Gabrielle replies that it's a small wound. Aphrodite says that like every mortal, she will eventually die. Gabrielle tries to reach Aphrodite, but she wants nothing to do with her. She tries to vanish, but can't.
Caligula looks at Xena who holds up the chains. He asks her how she was able to make him bleed. She replies that she is the Celtic Goddess of Sex and that when she heard the Olympians were dead, she thought it was time to spread her wings. Caligula asks her what her power is and she replies that she has the power to pierce the veil of immortality, to make gods bleed or die. Caligula it's a risk for a god to keep her around. Xena retorts thats it's a risk not to. She says she's better to have than Aphrodite. Xena flips up and breaks her chains on a spear sticking out of the wall. She warns that she makes a good friend, but an even better enemy and then leaves.
In the palace at night, Caligula hears the voice of his mother in his head, calling him pathetic. He yells at her. Michael laughs. Caligula turns to see Michael leaning over Caligula's throne.
In the catacombs, Eve is praying with the Elijans, in the middle of a circle of them. Michael appears and touches her forehead. The Elijans are unaware of what is happening. Eve stands and faces him. He tells her that she is ready and leads her away.
ACT THREE
Caligula sits on his throne. Eve is brought in by two guards and is thrown to the floor. Eve asks him to let go of lust and violence. He draws a dagger and moves over to her, holding it above his head. Xena enters and Eve stands to face her. Eve starts to tell Xena that she doesn't need her to interfere with her mission, when Xena punches her, knocking her unconscious. Xena asks Caligula what he is doing, and he replies that the demon with wings said that killing Eve would ensure his legacy. Xena says that for his cult of blood, he needs to kill Eve in front of the masses, not in private. Xena asks why he prefers Aphrodite to her, and he replies that he doesn't prefer her, he just needs a final kiss good-bye from her.
Aphrodite is lying by the bath. Gabrielle lifts her into a sitting position and Aphrodite asks what she wants. Aphrodite still doesn't remember Gabrielle. Michael appears and raises his sword over Aphrodite. Xena runs in and kicks him. Gabrielle helps Aphrodite move out of the way. Xena and Michael fight. Xena kicks Michael several times and then kicks him into the pool. She lands behind Michael and puts the Pinch on him. Xena pushes his head under water. Gabrielle yells for Xena to stop. Michael tries to justify his actions that he was trying to Aphrodite to stop Caligula. Xena won't listen to him and pushes him under the water again. A bright light washes down from the sky and engulfs Xena. Michael is standing in the water and laughs. He disappears. The light releases Xena and Gabrielle moves over to her. Xena tells Gabrielle that she's lost her power to kill gods. Aphrodite passes out. Gabrielle hugs Xena. Caligula enters with several guards. Caligula picks her up and kisses her, sucking her godhood into him.
ACT FOUR
Caligula kisses Aphrodite, sucking her godhood into him. Xena kicks him. He jumps across the room and vanishes. Gabrielle moves to Aphrodite. Aphrodite's memory is back. Xena and Gabrielle help her up. Aphrodite holds up her hands to vanish, but nothing happens. Aphrodite is confused.
In the dungeon, Eve and Ares share a cell. Xena enters. Eve sneers at Xena and turns her head from her. Ares asks what's happened and Xena tells him that Aphrodite has her mind, but not her godhood. She also tells him that Eli has stripped her of her powers to kill gods. Ares moves aside and Xena moves over to Eve. Xena apologizes and reaches out her hand, but Eve bats it away. Shes mad at Xena for trampling over her decision. Xena replies that she is her mother and she would die before she let Caligula harm her. Eve informs her that she cant protect her forever and Xena replies, "Well, it's funny you should say that." and looks at her seriously.
Eve's hands are tied and Xena leads her through the crowd of Romans from a horse. Eve stumbles as she is dragged along, Romans throwing rocks at her. Eve is tied to a pole. Caligula enters and moves to Eve. He tells the Romans that they are there to witness the chariot race celebrating the allegiance between him and Xena. He holds out his hand and Xena takes it. The people cheer. Caligula informs them that the winner of the race gets to kill Eve. The people cheer. Xena and Caligula each mount a chariot. Caligula and Xena take off, the people cheering. Caligula throws a fireball at some soldiers, but misses his target. The race continues. Caligula throws a fireball at some Romans. Caligula is in the lead. Xena catches up. Caligula throws a fireball ahead of them. They are neck in neck. Caligula whips Xena, then his horses and has the lead again. Xena takes the lead. They are back in the square. Caligula's chariot goes over a ramp and he falls out of it. Xena wins. Caligula's horses drag the chariot behind them. Roman soldiers move out of the way as the chariot crashes. Xena moves over to Eve. Caligula joins her and says that she gets to spill the blood, and Xena replies that it won't be Eve's blood she spills. She takes off her helmet and Gabrielle yells out that shes Xena. Caligula says he knows that name and then realizes Xena can slay gods. Xena replies, "Also known as Xena, mother of the girl you so charmingly called 'Whore of Rome.'" She draws her sword and kicks him. He falls down the steps. The crowd keeps shouting her name as she speaks. Xena moves over to him. A fireball forms in his hand, but Xena kicks his hand and the fireball rolls away. The crowd continues to cheer Xena's name. Caligula faces the Romans. He tells them they must respect him, but they start to jeer and a girl throws a tomato at him and the Romans laugh. Xena tells him that the only way he can earn his place of glory is to kill himself. Gabrielle unties Eve. Xena holds her sword up to his chest and he holds it. He stabs himself and the people gasp. He falls to his knees, blood pouring from his mouth and dies. Xena leaves with Eve and Gabrielle following. The people surround Caligula.
Later, in the palace, Xena and Gabrielle are dressed in their outfits again. Gabrielle joins Xena who says she feels dirty about what happened with Caligula. Gabrielle said she had to because he was evil. Xena replies that he wasn't evil, just damaged. Aphrodite and Eve are sitting on a bed that Ares is lying on. Aphrodite is trying to disappear, repeating that it's not fair when she can't. Ares welcomes her to his nightmare. Xena holds out her arm and Eve moves over to her and holds her as they leave. Eve asks her if she's sorry thats she's lost her power to kill gods. Xena answers that she still has her two greatest gifts (Eve and Gabrielle).
