- An experiment with a machine that can make duplicates of an object goes wrong and Red Dwarf explodes. Where the Red Dwarf crew find the machine has made two copies of Red Dwarf, both ships contains their good and evil selves.
- Lister and Kryten are conducting an experiment with the matter paddle to replicate objects by triple, if successful it would solve any supply problems, Rimmer is witness to the first test on a strawberry, one strawberry is perfect and the other is rotten, the replication extracted the best of one version and the worst of the other, Lister taps some buttons to reverse the process and sends the Red Dwarf core into critical mass, the crew escapes on Starbug, it seems Red Dwarf might explode, Lister assures them the ship is full of fail-safes and is unlikely to explode, Red Dwarf does explode proving Lister wrong.
The crew won't last long on Starbug and launch an immediate salvage operation, the scanners detect two objects in the blast zone, they are replicated Red Dwarfs. The triplicator spawned two identical copies of the ship when Lister reversed the process, if the strawberries were anything to go by one could be flawless and the other putrid, but the copies have a limited lifespan of one hour, they have to board the ship with a functional triplicator rebuild Red Dwarf, they head to one of the ships, Lister and Cat go alone as Kryten has to recharge Rimmer's batteries.
Lister and Cat wander the corridors of the good ship, they are amazed at the beauty of the place, pristine, well-lit corridors, celestial music piped through the tannoy and even a Pot Noodle from the vending machine is exquisite. They meet high versions of themselves, benevolent, intellectual monks dressed in white, gold-lined robes. Rimmer and Kryten are in the sleeping quarters with their counterparts, there is a triplicator on board but it has only half the components, the rest are on the low ship.
The crew board the low ship with their high versions, this ship is in disarray, murky lighting and wreckage abound, Lister and Rimmer go one way with the high Cat and Kryten, the high Kryten is shot at and an explosive is thrown at them, Lister and Rimmer run off, while their high companions are killed. Lister alone meets the low crew, all hygienically-challenged, morally bankrupt and insane. His own counterpart is unshaven with blackened teeth, Cat is a long-haired, saber toothed brute, Kryten is malfunctioning, but the low Rimmer is the most astonishing of all, dragged up like a dominator, he knocks out Lister with a holo-whip.
The original Cat and Kryten find the other half of the triplicator in the ruined sleeping quarters, Lister is taken to the science room where a chip is placed in his neck so the lows can remote control him, they want to steal the original craft as their version is decayed and unusable, they commandeer him to kill the last of the high crew, Cat finds Rimmer and brings him to Kryten but they couldn't find Lister, he appears with a gag in his mouth, Cat removes it and Lister warns the others he's under control.
He strangles Cat who stops him with a knee to the groin, Lister picks up a bazookoid and fires at the others, Kryten chloroforms him. They board Starbug and prepare for take off, Lister regains concious and attacks the others, Kryten pulls the chip out of Lister's neck and throws it somewhere, the cloned Dwarfs disappear and the original returns to existence, Lister accidentally sits on the control chip and is under command again, the low Lister is on the craft which Cat shoots him hiding in the locker.
Kryten goes to remove the chip but Cat takes the remote control to play with Lister for a bit.
