For the title, a surprisingly good movie.
erickang27 July 2006
First of all, let me preface this with that I am not a fan of Hyun-bin and his work. That being said, this movie introduces a new first time actress Lee, Hyeon-hee. At times I felt like punching myself in the face because she was so adorable. Her tears conveyed emotion to me, not Visine eye drop solution. I will be eagerly awaiting any new movies she will be in.

Moving on to the actual movie, I was afraid this would be some sort of corny excuse to plaster the media with Hyun-bin's face; however, the movie itself is quite good.

The short but sweet love story really picks up in the 2nd half of the film. I would cry and laugh at the same time our lead and ingénue did. Very few movies leave me satisfied at the way the movie concluded, this is one of them.

Give it a shot, if not for the surprisingly good movie (albeit horribly titled) then for the ridiculously cute actress in her acting debut.

i had a good cry
lady_tsunami296 November 2006
to be honest i watched this movie because Hyun Bin is good looking. Lee Yeon Hee looks like an anime character with that hair in a cute way. i had no high expectations. i just thought, "hmmm, a subbed movie. let's give it a try." i don't understand a word of Korean so English subs all the way! this movie was OK in the beginning, and maybe you knew what was gonna happen but it still made my eyes puffy from crying. i liked how they shot this scene where Hyun Bin remembers his mom bringing in clothes from the rain. and the part where he walks back home at night. it's funny to me. if you're a sucker for romance movies, watch this one :) and have a box of Kleenex.

A sappy love story.
dy1588 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Jae-kyung had turned 18 and he is eligible to inherit his late grandfather's vast amount of fortunes. He went out with his friends and became arrogant in his ways.

But, there was a catch in the will his grandfather left behind. He has to graduate from a small high school in the countryside because if that did not happened, he cannot totally inherit the entire fortune. Naturally it drove Jae-kyung mad. For someone who has quite an amount of money in his bank account, it was like a slap in the face.

When he arrived at the place, he then realised how rural it was. The behaviour, mannerisms of the local people astounded him. There, he met the girl whom he actually once met many years ago when they were younger. It's his fellow classmate at his new school - Eun-hwan. He soon found out she had an illness which could not be cured. But Eun-hwan put on a brave face and pretended that nothing had happened and went on with her part-time job at the gas station and juggling with her studies at the same time. It was during those times Jae-kyung realises how much he likes her.

It might be a sappy love story as the summary title has stated, but it's just a beautiful story which will move one who is watching it.

Nice Work!!! Go for it.
sanketwagh9 November 2011
I was not in the mood. I had planned to go out with some friends. But due to some reason i couldn't. Then I found this movie over internet. Well first, i thought its one of the stupid sen-ti romance films. But i was wrong. The movie starts with a rich, arrogant guy who had every happiness in his life.and a cute girl. She had everything in her little tiny winy eyes. She was poor and had anemia. The disease which was killing her slightly day by day. And the guy fell in love with her for her innocence. The movie taught us many things. Love is pure, not selfish. Though it hurts but at least once you should fall in it and then you will fell its magic. Watch it with your partner. She/He will love you more after watching it :)

Not worth a million
torrent-spam18 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The plot was weak, had no buildup, and I didn't think it was that sad. It's predictable and since there really wasn't any plot buildup, the film got pretty draggy and dull and I found myself just waiting for the girl to die. A good sad movie would have some kind of emotional buildup and a climax. There really wasn't any in this movie. It just felt like a whole bunch of scenes placed together so it's all there, but without any real significance. Ya know what I mean? Also, I didn't feel the chemistry between the characters and the relationship didn't develop well either. It was a bit too sudden and it felt as if the writer's added twists here and there to spice up the relationship and make us go "oh that's so cute". There's also a lot of clichés in this film but the writer's didn't use them too well. Nevertheless, the cast was attractive, the acting was good, and I was impressed with Lee Yeon Hee. There were also a couple of cute scenes here and there that I liked. Overall, it was okay. I kind of struggled to finish though. Sometimes it felt like the film was going nowhere. As mean as it sounds, it took her forever to die.

Beautiful romance story
Eglaya200320 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Don't let the title fool you. It's cheesy and mushy, but the movie surprised me. I didn't expect it to be so good. It grabs you and doesn't let you go. The plot is kinda simple - 18-year-old heir Kang Jaekyung (played by Bin Hyeon) is a spoiled brat who is used to getting everything he wants. Alas, he will be entitled to his grandfather's millions only if he will graduate at particular school in particular place. At first he is being rebellious and all, but then he realizes that he's seeing this girl Choi Eunwhan (played by Yeonhee Lee) more often. Of course, the title suggests that he will fall in love. But it's trickier than it seems, because Eunwhan has a heart-disease and then the changes begin.

Everything is shown with such kindness and disengagement that it has ALMOST made me cry. I mean - ME, and I never cry during movies. What else. Well, nice job of director of photography and editor. Really nice. Also the OST is like wow. Do I have to tell you that I have the theme song on my play-list? :) And it is sung by Kim Jaejoong!! My baby <3 <3 + the whole TVXQ (Dong Bang Shin Ki) crew at the credits. Needless to say that I also have piano sheet music of Insa (theme song) and can read most of it in Hangul :) So yeah, if you want to see some true, natural and not exaggerated romance, this movie is for you. And guys, it has some fighting scenes as well :)

Early Hyun Bin and Lee Yeon Hee melodrama a bit dated
phd_travel11 March 2020
The soppy melodrama movie starts quite funny with a spoilt rich kid from the city being taught a lesson by being sent to a small village school. Things move quickly as it's a movie not a series.

The lead actress Lee Yeon Hee acts well at only 18. Hyun Bin has come a long way since then so you can see he had to pay his dues acting in this early melodrama and he does a good job given the material and shows some range from playboy to caring compassionate lover.

It's full of clichés but in a good way. For fans of the two it's worth a watch. Not a great movie but okay for one watch.

lots of emotions
andjel_ko19 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
i have seen this movie not expecting more than a simple evening movie to relax a little bit. at least i expected to cry or feel some deep emotions during the film. but it happened. i have seen many good Korean dramas but only few have left an effect as this movie. it was as nice and touching as You are my sunshine with a good, a little bit of the theme, introduction and a very good story that goes on more than one level and at the end we are to understand the entire story and feel happy for the things that happened. the title of the movie is a millionaire first love, but it is more a story of a girl to whom he is in love with because she carries all the strings and is connected with all the parts of the movie (except for the introduction) The movie is also well made, seems that Koreans got some money to do movies lately.

Romance, tragedy and transition
Abhipriyo10 August 2014
My last South Korean movie was 'My Sassy Girl' and it was pleasure some to watch it. Therefore, I went for 'A Millionaire's First Love'. The film grasps you in the beginning with some mild Asian action around an arrogant rich boy who cares less. He is legal heir to his late grandfather's fortune, who in turn has had kept some unturned dices in his kitty; his will.

From here on, the film carries on in a small town near Seoul where it embarks on an emotional journey of the lead characters. There are few funny scenes that go well with the movie. At several stages the characters deal with their past, like in 'My Sassy Girl' but, which is not completely expressed in the words of the characters but revealed through their emotion, which is pretty nice and emotional. One has to understand it to make out the past relation.

On the whole, this is a nice South Korean romance flick high on emotions. Go for it if you want a good time pass and emotional drama but only if you are not expecting much and any new. 6 out of 10.

Excellent movie
ghajiniblue6 November 2009
I'm a 23 year old male teenager who happened to stumble upon this movie two years ago at school during a free day in math class (when I was 15). I liked it then, but the math class ended before the movie could be finished. Finally, on the WB a few days ago, the movie aired and I saw the conclusion. this movie contains a heartfelt conclusion to a story where you get to care , two polar opposite teenagers who face peer struggles and the perils of love and death. The situations that occur are very real, and very sad. Once the movie finishes, you'll be left wondering what happens to everyone (heck, even though it doesn't make sense, I want a sequel!).

Loved this more than I expected

Warning: Spoilers
"A Millionaire's First Love". Sounds sort of cheesy, right? That's what I was thinking when I friend recommend that I watch this movie. I've never really been into that whole "forgein" movie cliché, even though most of my friends are die-hard "My Sassy Girl" fans and can't go a day without watching at least 5 episodes of Fruits Basket. When I sat down to watch the DVD, it was 11:00 PM, and I'll admit, I was sort of putting off watching the movie- I just didn't feel like going through the headache of watching the film and reading the subs at the same time. The first 30 minutes into the film, I became engrossed- the arrogant- yet hot- rich boy made me want to slap some sense into him and kiss his cheek at the same time. When Eue was introduced, I immediately fell in love with how cute and sweet she was. The acting was believable, and the process of Jae and Eue falling in love left me feeling melt-y and gooey inside. In my head, I pictured a happy ending, with a wedding and flowers and happy little animals everywhere, like something out of a Disney movie. So when the course of the movie was altered when Eue admitted that being with Jae made her heart condition worse, the tears started flowing. It was so sudden- one minute, I'm just watching a sweet movie about love, and the next moment, I'm crying so hard I'm starting to heave. I didn't notice I was crying until the very end, when Jae is at the graduation ceremony, and in Eue's chair, lays a bunch of flowers. I've never cried so hard during a movie, except during the Titanic, and sometimes even then do I finish the movie dried-eyed. This movie is defiantly for the romantic-at-heart. Since watching this movie, I've gone on seeing such movies as "My Sassy Girl" and "200 Pounds Beauty". I will always love this movie, and recommend to everyone. I must admit, that sometimes, when I'm alone in my apartment, I'll pop in Millionaire's First Love, and cry and laugh and stare-longly-at-Jae to my heart's content, but the first experience of watching this movie will always be the best and most unique.

Don't believe the hype
strfrank3 June 2016
As Korean movies inherently have a smaller audience than the latest Hollywood blockbusters, it is usually a good idea to take the ratings with a grain of salt. Most often they are made by enthusiasts that won't give you an objective perspective - in fact everything but.

In this particular case, I should have heeded my own advise, the story was exceedingly greasy and frankly just not original enough to deserve the rating that it got here.(7.4 as of 06/16) The characters were absolutely bland and one-dimensional, it makes you think you are watching a cartoon.(especially Hyun Bin as Kang) Some may blame this on culture differences, but I vehemently reject the sentiment. This romance is at best on par with the Twilight franchise. I have seen romance in Korean movies that was exceedingly well done, this one just doesn't stand up in quality.(My Sassy Girl if you haven't seen it!)

It is a very small group of people that I'd advise to watch this movie. But to even label it as a flick for teenagers might be insulting to this particular kind of specimen. However, if you absolutely want to watch this because you liked the synopsis, I beseech you to check out this alternative: More Than Blue (2009) covers almost the same theme, but won't insult your intelligence in the process.

Loved it, good tear jerker
jazminderr3 September 2015
This was one of the first Korean movies I watched. A story of an arrogant rich boy and a sweet girl with a secret and their love. Its about redemption too by the end. Knowing now the clichés of illnesses and love in Korean romance, I have to say this was on of my faves and still is. The acting was superbly done for me personally despite the possible clichés.

There are some fight scenes, some stupid scenes and some really sweet romantic scenes. It had some funny but mainly sweet and sad moments. Its definitely a tear jerker. My favourite part is when they stay in their house together waiting.

Overall one worth watching.

Perfect Movie
kupukupumu21 January 2013
I can only recommend this movie to those who like drama. The acting are good, the cast are perfect. Okay, I maybe a bit over the moon, but seriously the plot is great and unlike most drama, there is no unnecessary scene in this movie. I am a 40 years old male and usually into horror, yet I could not stop watching this movie and tried to comment here 3:30 in the morning.

I was wishing that the ending could be different, but for the perfectness of the movie, it just has to end the way it is. This movie shows that great movie is about great plot, cast with chemistry and beautiful scene. A great movies does not necessary big budget Peter Jackson's CGI action. Wish people can make more movie like this.

Warning: This is not another teenager love movie.

Irresistibly Romantic and Powerfully Emotional, A Millionaire's First Love is as Unmissable as it is Unforgettable
totalovrdose21 February 2015
Up until watching A Millionaire's First Love, Hachi was quite possibly the saddest movie I had the privilege of viewing. This South Korean romantic drama however may take home the prize of being the first feature that reduced me to tears for a majority of its story. Those who have seen My Sassy Girl may remember the moment Gyeon-woo explained to the Girl how South Koreans appreciate melodrama. Clearly there is some truth behind this logic, and A Millionaire's First Love contains a rich assortment of powerfully beautiful and sad moments that will certainly cause a number of intense emotions to flourish. More powerful than A Walk to Remember, and more romantic than Here on Earth, A Millionaire's First Love is a story of romance, life, family, and the choices that all of us make.

During the opening scene though, you could be forgiven for thinking you stumbled into a martial arts film by accident with the fight that dominates the screen. This however serves the purpose to show how the reckless Kang Jae-kyung (Hyun Nin), a soon to be millionaire who is as pretentious as he is arrogant, spends much of his time. His friends and acquaintances who occupy this spoiled existence with him are largely unexplored, despite appearing on more than one occasion, and the connection between he and a rich young woman who believes herself to be his paramour is strangely peculiar, in that not even the characters appear capable of comprehending this subplot.

At the same time though we are introduced to Choi Eun-hwan (Yeon-hee Lee), who lives a very different existence. Emotional, but at the same time strong in spirit, she doesn't have the luxurious upbringing that Jae-kyung has been gifted. Despite this, both of these characters coincidentally meet.

Originally difficult to follow due to the lack of background the audience is provided, a thorough back-story is eventually revealed, which magnifies the intense feelings that continuously tug at the viewer's heart strings. Each of the images, behaviors and items have a place in the story, these been purposefully revealed in the beginning stages of the film, only to be later put in perspective.

Jae-kyung's life of luxury is however thwarted by none other than his deceased grandfather, whose inheritance he was destined to receive. Informed by his lawyer that he needs to graduate from a predetermined school before receiving the wealthy entitlement, he finds that all he had taken for granted is denied to him. Sent to a school far from civilization, he discovers Eun-hwan, the young woman he met in the city, is a student there as well, their relationship being the focus of the film.

Through her, Jae-kyung is able to acquire for himself an appreciation for life's beauty, entering a world where ten dollars is capable of purchasing more happiness than he has experienced in a lifetime. These tender moments, combined with the brilliant acting by the leads, who demonstrate an exceptional emotional range, the in-depth writing of the story, and the feature's extraordinary direction, makes A Millionaire's First Love a film that is as poetic as it is memorable.

Although there may be room to argue that some of the plot is exaggerated and overacted, for the most part, A Millionaire's First Love is as terribly sad as it is incalculably beautiful. I personally spent over half of this film in a state of tears, with over a dozen tissues been sacrificed to stem the flow of liquid. To put it simply, if you take umbrage at films that may reduce you to an emotional mess, you might want to consider avoiding this feature.

Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always honestly romantic and charming, those who appreciate South Korean drama, or romantic films in general, will find this is one feature that simply must be included in their collection.

Cute girl. Cute guy. Boring story.
zhixiong7 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Lots of cute people in the story. Even the butler/lawyer is good-looking for his grey age. The millionaire is good-looking, his rich friends are good-looking but lack in character development. The rich female friend seems to have a crush on the millionaire but it was left undeveloped. Why did the millionaire's tall classmate in blue overalls all the time? Again, it was left unexplained. Who was the girl who slept with the millionaire? If the millionaire is arrogant, why is he so embarrassed with his butler on finding the girl on his bed? The millionaire's parents was not properly explained other than a short 5 second flashback.

The cute female lead took almost 2 hours to die. Painfully slow death.

Pain beyond 💯%
shritlovanshi16 December 2020
My country was making alot of remakes, so i thought to try something new. Mood was romantic, so I searched for best romantic asian movies and got my eyes on this. Watched about 15% of the trailer and had a strong feeling to directly watch the movie, and so I did. Thought that the movie would be fun but it left with tears, red face and the whole body numb.

The Horror! Run Away Now!
Xiayu8 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie exists for the sole purpose of following Hyeon Bin's face with a camera. And while it is indeed a thing of no small beauty, it's unfortunately not enough to sustain 116 minutes of film.

And what of the plot, such as it is? Young rich brat leads dissolute life, doesn't go to school, drinks too much, gets into fights, throws his weight around, then turns 18 and inherits a fortune from his dead grandfather, but on one condition: graduate from high school or you get nothing.

So he goes back to school, and doesn't he look nice in his uniform! The school is somewhere in the countryside, there are only half a dozen kids in a class which resembles a casting director's idea of special ed. Within about a minute, rich brat falls in love with the petrol station attendant-substitute teacher-dying girl, and overnight becomes A Nice Guy. Oh, did I mention that he, and she, are Orphans? And there's an orphanage-saving scheme thrown in for pathos?

It's so stupid and underwritten it doesn't really deserve a review. It's a shocking mish-mash of styles. The script is woeful and embarrassing. The acting is at times unbelievably bad. There is no effort made to make the plot or the relationships even slightly realistic.

The tragedy of it is, Hyeon Bin can do so much more than just look good. In two different mini-series, Ireland and My name is Kim Samsoon, he proved he is capable of quite a bit. One hopes his movie career doesn't start and finish with this piece of swill. So dreadful it gets 3/10 - 2 for Hyeon Bin's face, and 1 for his hair.
