Now we all know this as an iconic piece of television history. So I have to give points for that.

My main issue here is with the fire challenge. It's very boring to watch and had no tension. One team was leading from the Start.

The elimination in this episode was fairly sensible and predictable. The vote split however is interesting, showing that even in these early days of the show strategy was being used.

The Start of a legend

Warning: Spoilers
I have had a very interesting relationship with this show. I was super into it as a child, watched every season until the season John Cochran won (nothing against him, just I grew out of it, as well as all TV in general around that point in 2013). Then after a 9.5 year break from TV and Survivor, I decided to give 43 a chance, and ended up really enjoying it. So I decided to re-watch every season from season 1 to fill in empty season times. This is a very nice introduction that serves as a perfect set up for the great show that this has become. Sonja seemed pretty fun so it was sad to see her go, but I can perfectly understand why she did given the context of her elimination, so that was the only sad part.

Beginning of the show and reality TV in general!

Warning: Spoilers
This would mark the beginning of a legendary show and also in general, reality TV as a whole. As we did not know what we were in for in 2000! Sixteen cast mates in the pilot, for thirty-nine days were marooned and given less food and supplies. And try to make it with challenges.

Reward challenges you win stuff like food or supplies. While with immunity, you stay on for three more days.

Lost an immunity challenge, one would be voted out in the end. Then after twenty days like. You merge into one big tribe. And not playing as a team like in the beginning.

But play for individual immunity as only one person can as the show's motto goes "Outwit, Outlast, Outplay!" And claim the $1M and title of the Sole Survivor.

How reality TV has come a long way and how more and more shows are produced on a limited budget and real people instead of actors!

Slow Start

It is hard to know some of the classic Survivor in comparison to what we have now. I'll admit that what we have now is often too flashy at times. But this is a fairly decent episode to start off the series. Parts of it are boring and fairly run of the mill. That's to be expected since they don't know much about how the show would evolve over time. We get a fairly easy vote off and not too much is revealed right away. There isn't much drama, although there is a lot of working together, which you don't always see in the show. The immunity challenge is simple. A part of me wonders if they changed the form of fire to flint since water proof matches takes much longer to say. It is actually good that some of what we see in this episode isn't part of the common place part of Survivor in the future. But it is a fairly good episode and we get a simpler, less glorified version of Jeff than we have in current seasons.
