Chloë Grace Moretz and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are set to star together in “White Night,” a psychological thriller inspired by the true story of the mass murder-suicide in the Jonestown cult in 1978.
Anne Sewitsky (“A Very British Scandal”) is directing the film that will star Gordon-Levitt as Jim Jones, the Christian socialist preacher, self-proclaimed God and cult leader, and Moretz as Deborah Layton, a woman who rose through the ranks of the cult and tried to expose Jones before it was too late.
“White Night” is based on Layton’s memoir “Seductive Poison,” and it details how on November 18, 1978, more than 900 people died in a mass murder-suicide, one of the largest on record. The massacre occurred at the Jonestown settlement that Jones established in Guyana in 1974, an extension of his San Francisco-based cult.
William Wheeler wrote the script based on Layton’s memoir.

Stanley Nelson and Firelight Films have partnered with Independent Lens on a new trilogy of films that will chronicle pivotal moments in American history driven by Black artists, cultural leaders, and everyday people. Nelson will direct and produce three new documentaries comprising “America Revisited II.” The films will span topics such as the rise of funk music, the evolution of African American art, and the deeply rooted, vibrant history of Harlem.
The trilogy will kick off with “Make It Funky: The History of Funk,” followed by “In Our Own Image: The Story of African-American Art,” and conclude with “Harlem: The Soul of the Nation.” In addition, Nelson will direct “Creating the New World: The Transatlantic Slave Trade,” a previously announced documentary that was commissioned for “America Revisited I,” an earlier trilogy of films Nelson also directed for Independent Lens.

One of the most important roles a documentarian can play is to make sure that people tied to historical events, especially underreported events, are given an opportunity to share their memories while they still can. It’s the principle behind so many Ken Burns productions and the driving mission of Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation.
It’s a mission that few directors pursue with the commitment of Stanley Nelson, the prolific filmmaker behind The Murder of Emmett Till, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple and Freedom Riders. Until the September 11th attacks, the tragedy in Jonestown on November 18th, 1978 represented the largest number of American civilian casualties in a single non-natural event. It is unfathomable now, as it was then, that more than 900 Americans – members of a San Francisco-based religious group called the Peoples Temple – died after drinking poison at the urging of their leader, the Reverend Jim Jones, in a secluded South American jungle settlement. Photographs taken after the carnage forever document the sheer enormity of the event: the bodies of hundreds of people, including children,...

Stanley Nelson’s new documentary about the Black Panther Party is admirably sober, but it nevertheless evokes great urgency and passion. Using archival footage and interviews — with historians, with the Panthers themselves, and with the cops who pursued them — it brings to life a still-contentious historical moment and, without too much insistence or obviousness, artfully draws parallels with today. Watching it, we recognize that the things the Panthers fought against remain a part of our society. Whether that’s a testament to the quixotic nature of their project, or just a sign that more work needs to be done, is up to us to decide.Though the period he’s tackling lasts only about a decade — from the group’s formation in 1966 by activists Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton, through to its fragmentation in the mid- to late-70s — Nelson (Freedom Riders, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

It doesn't take much beyond a glance at the headlines in the past year or so to know that racial and class inequality are still among the major issues facing the country. The intersection of both has been the basis of decades of protests and activism, and certainly one of the loudest voices as such in the '60s and '70s was the Black Panther Party. Headed to the Sundance Film Festival is "The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution," a new documentary look at the organization: today, we have an exclusive clip from the film. Directed by Stanley Nelson ("Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple"), the doc dives into a trove of archival footage to tell the story of the Black Panthers and provides new interviews. The film intends to bring a fresh context to the group beyond its incendiary activity. That much is clear from this clip,...

Folk legend Pete Seeger, who passed away last night at the age of 94, is one of the voices in "Freedom Summer," the new documentary from Stanley Nelson ("Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple") that just had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The film, about the hard-fought civil rights battles in the summer of 1964 in segregated Mississippi, will air on PBS as part of "American Experience" on June 24th. The network today released a clip, below, featuring Seeger and Mississippi resident Roscoe Jones talking about a concert Seeger did in a church in Meridian, Ms that summer, during which the performer got word that the bodies of missing, murdered civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner had been found. It's no secret that Film Junk has a few documentary fans on staff and every year we try and highlight some of the stand out non-fiction films. Although The Cove and Anvil! The Story of Anvil made some appearances on our year end lists -- along with a few others on our end of decade list -- we didn't really get a chance to write up any doc specific lists, so I figured I'd share some of the love The Documentary Blog has been spreading over the past week. Below you'll find my top 10 docs of 2009 followed by my top 50 documentaries of the decade. Also, I put together a collection of some acclaimed non-fiction filmmakers (including Joe Berlinger, Sarah Price and Jeff Feuerzeig among others) who have shared their picks for best of the decade as well! You can check that list out here [1]. Until then, have a look below...

SXSW off in right direction
Composer Moby and documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson are the first speakers confirmed for the 2008 South by Southwest Film Conference & Festival, set to take place March 7-15 in Austin.
Moby will participate in a session entitled "A Conversation with Moby", hosted and moderated by Doreen Ringer-Ross of BMI. The session, scheduled for March 11, will look at the musician's relationship with cinema, from composing original scores (Southland Tales) to contributing and licensing his music for film and TV projects (The Bourne Ultimatum, Heat). In addition, it will include a look at "moby gratis," the musician's new endeavor to offer some of his music free of charge to independent filmmakers.
Nelson, who directed Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple and The Murder of Emmett Till, will discuss his work, focusing on historical documentaries.
SXSW also announced the creation of Global Doc Days, an initiative formed to shine a brighter spotlight on documentary films produced worldwide. International film organizations will be invited to showcase some of their latest in nonfiction filmmaking.
