Daria and the s-word.
planktonrules15 March 2011
Tom falls asleep in Daria's room and awakens late at night. While no funny business occurred, this is misinterpreted and Quinn tells one of her vacuous friends about it--thus starting the rumor that she and Tom had sex. Suddenly the whole idea of sex is there before them--what WILL Tom and Daria do? Will they take their relationship to a whole new physical and emotional level? This is a pretty important topic for a teenagers' show. Too bad MTV had to be the place where it was first broadcast, as the station often dispenses VERY dubious advice and projects occasionally irresponsible messages to teens about sex! Instead, watch this one with your kids as it provides LOTS of opportunity to talk about values, standards and personal responsibility and safety.

As for the rest of the show, the other plot involved (yuck) Jake applying for a job AND contracting a creepy parasite! 'Nuff said....

Everybody thinks Daria slept with Tom
Tweekums24 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
When Tom and Daria fall asleep in Daria's room and don't wake till four in the morning Tom tries to sneak out of the house so nobody jumps to the wrong conclusion. Unfortunately he bumps into Jake, who mentions his presence to Helen, who goes into talk to Daria. If this wasn't embarrassing enough Quinn hears this and calls her friends to tell them... by the next day everybody at school things Daria has had sex! She manages to quash the rumour by deliberately starting a rumour about Quinn but all the talk about whether she has had sex makes her wonder if perhaps she is ready to do it after all.

This was a really mature episode which handled the subject of sex in a way that was both mature and humorous. Daria behaved in a way that seemed perfectly natural and ultimately made a mature and reasoned decision as to whether or not to do it with Tom. The way Daria deliberately started the rumour about Quinn was a little cruel but she deserved it for telling everybody about Daria and Tom... even if they had slept together it wouldn't have been Quinn's place to tell anybody. The secondary story involving Jake catching a parasite from sushi was a bit gross but provided a few laughs.

MTV's take on The First Time...
safenoe4 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Bloodhound Gang's "Bad Touch" was released 2 years before "My Night at Daria's" and Basic Instinct was released 8 years before this Daria episode. Anyway, this episode of Daria dealt the topic of whether Daria should have sex (for the first time) with Tom, the erstwhile boyfriend of Jane.

One hilarious (and knowing scene) was when Daria broaches the topic with Tom, he in the blink of an eye whisks out a condom! Anyway, they agree to do the deed, with Tom setting up candles (scented?) and having flowers in his bedroom. As the time approaches, Daria pulls out (pardon the pun) and decides not to proceed with uniting with Tom to be the beast with two backs, much to Tom's despair.

I wonder though if Daria and Tom had watched Basic Instinct first. This could have set the mood, and who knows, could have encouraged them to unleash their desire. Or maybe the Black Label edition of Daria could have Ralph Bakshi direct his own version of My Night at Daria's.
