House reveals that 42 is his lucky number. This is also the answer to "the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything," according to "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. That's no coincidence. In 2005, the year before this episode was filmed, Hugh Laurie was slated by Adams to play Arthur Dent in the "Hitchhiker's Guide" movie, but that project fell apart due to Adams' death.
This episode features one of the rare examples that House is genuinely impressed by and happy for Wilson, as when the latter tells him he won the poker tournament he doesn't mock him for said success and even starts to smile for a split second before it inspires him to test for the correct diagnosis.

House talks about the staff wearing "Frankie Says Relax" t-shirts 12 years ago. That would be 1994, appearing off by a decade, since Frankie Goes to Hollywood released "Relax" in 1984. After reaching #1 on the UK pop charts it dropped, then re-climbed the charts until it occupied the #2 spot behind the FG2H hit "Two Tribes." This was the first such simultaneous UK charting by a group since The Beatles in the 60s. The song was subsequently re-mixed and re-released in 1993 and achieved a measure of prominence in dance clubs, which does fit the 1994 reference.
