Terror Vision has quickly become one of my go-to labels for obscure horror titles, and they're getting a jump-start on the Halloween season with #13WeeksOfHalloween, offering an eclectic mix of new, rare, and cult releases on VHS, Blu-ray, 4K Uhd, LP, and cassette:
"Halloween is Terror Vision's favorite time of the year but it's always a bummer when it's over. Much like many of you, the beloved genre distributor begins celebrating the spooky season in September... but this year, that's not good enough - and that's why they've created #13WeeksOfHalloween.

First announced way back in the summer of 2015, the Syfy/Universal co-production Blood Drive is a high-octane, over-the-top scripted series in the classic grindhouse movie tradition. Set in a near-apocalyptic future, the 13-episode series centers around La’s last good cop who is forced to join a twisted, gory cross-country death race – with cars powered by blood (Blood Car meets Death Race anyone?). Blood Drive stars Alan Ritchson, Thomas Dominique, Christina Ochoa, Marama Corlett, and Colin Cunningham; the shows comes from James Roland (Weed) who is a co-executive producer on the show.
The official synopsis:
Los Angeles in the near future: where water is as scarce as oil and climate change keeps the temperature at a cool 115 degrees in the shade. It’s a place where crime is so rampant that only the worst violence is punished and where Arthur Bailey (Ritchson) — the city’s last good cop — runs afoul...

Adam Pinney’s “The Arbalest” won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature at this year’s South by Southwest. Now, the drama will be released later this month for all to enjoy.
From the minds behind “Too Many Cooks,” comes the story of a famed and enigmatic toymaker named Foster Kalt (Mike Brune), the inventor of the “Kalt Cube.” The film follows him in a series of flashbacks over the course of an interview with a TV reporter while he reflects on his lifelong obsession with Sylvia Frank (Tallie Medel).
FilmBuff Movies released a new trailer for the upcoming movie, which features Kalt discussing his first meeting with the apple of his eye, to years later stalking her from a cabin in the woods.

Syfy and Universal have today announced they have greenlit Blood Drive, a high-octane, over-the-top scripted series in the classic grindhouse movie tradition. Set in a near-apocalyptic future, the 13-episode series centers around La’s last good cop who is forced to join a twisted, gory cross-country death race – with cars powered by blood (Blood Car anyone?) and a dangerous femme fatale partner who sees people as fuel. Sounds a lot like Blood Drive the video game (pictured above) – but apparently this is no relation.
Blood Drive is from executive producers John Hlavin (Underworld: Awakening, The Shield) and David Straiton (Bates Motel, Hemlock Grove), who will also direct. Said Dave Howe, President, Syfy & Chiller:
This highly stylized roller coaster ride is a throwback to 1970s grindhouse cinema. With its fast-paced thrills and indie feel, Blood Drive will make an exciting and edgy addition to Syfy’s growing slate of original scripted series.

Set in the very near future where fuel prices are at an astronomical high and no-one can afford to drive any more, vegan schoolteacher Archie (Brune) is trying to invent an alternative engine that runs on wheatgrass, but when he accidentally cut himself he discovers that all his engine needs to work is blood… human blood. Resorting to ever more shocking and extreme behaviour to keep his blood car on the road, Archie draws the attention of the government and sex-crazed meat vendor Denise (Rowlett), much to the disgust of lovesick Lorraine (Chlumsky) who, until now, has been supplying him with the much-needed wheatgrass.
Another indie production, Blood Car was originally filmed in 2007 and only made it to UK shores some 5 years later – which typically is a bad sign when it comes to horror movies...

Per TVLine, Chlumsky (My Girl, Blood Car) will play Miriam Lass, a young FBI trainee under the tutelage of Laurence Fishburne’s Jack Crawford.

One of the most fascinating literary characters comes to life on television for the first time: psychiatrist-turned-serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In this new drama from Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies," "Heroes") based on the characters from Thomas Harris' classic novels, we see where this incredible story began.
Will Graham is a gifted criminal profiler who is on the hunt for a serial killer with the FBI. Graham's unique way of thinking gives him the astonishing ability to empathize with anyone - even psychopaths.

Blood Car is a sci-fi thriller set in the future. Not too far from now, gas prices have soared (even more) and few can afford to drive. Then Archie (Mike Brune) creates an alternative fuel, blood. All he needs are a few more litres to keep his beast going. Mike teams with a local meat vendor to really supe up his car. But what happens when the local townsfolk begin to disappear? Most horror fans will celebrate and Blood Car will release on DVD July 16th courtesy of Left Films. Fans of the bizarre can have a look at the film's official artwork here with the trailer below. The mission and purpose of the Dark Bridges Film Festival in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is a simple one. It brings quality genre fare to a market that has little to no chance of ever seeing any of these films in a theatrical release. Director John Allison and his team of dead sexy programmers have done a dandy job bringing together a lot of festival favourites. The Festival opens with Oscar Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film Bullhead, moody vampire flick Midnight Son, 80s VHS culture homage Manborg, the Canadian Theatrical Premiere of the very Coenesque Aussie flick Crawl, the effed-up hitman flick Kill List, cult car flick Blood Car, the supernatural family drama from Sweden Marianne, the fantastic horror comedy Some Guy Who Kills People, the Canadian cannibal comedy...

The box-office in 2011 is struggling. Consistently down on 2011′s takings every single week, your local cinemas are struggling to bring in the customers. Awards season has not been a financial success.
Last year The King’s Speech raked in £45.7 million, this year The Artist is struggling to break £8 million (something only 1 out of the 9 Oscar Best Picture nominees has managed to do) and with a sorry set of new releases next week I can’t see that changing anytime soon. I guess there’s always Batman. In July.
The Winner – The Woman in Black (again)
Now the highest grossing British horror film ever at the UK box-office The Woman in Black has overcome a huge Daniel Radcliffe shaped hurdle and possibly even elevated him to the point of legitimate adult star. I remain unconvinced but with a third week haul of £2,432,580 (pipping national treasure-porn The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to...

British-Indian retirement film draws ill-served older audience, but pales against popularity of The Woman in Black
The winner
With an average cast age in their 60s, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel can hardly be said to be targeting the demographic that visits the cinema most frequently: young people. But the potency of the perennially ill-served older audience has once again been demonstrated. John Madden's comedy drama about elderly Brits seeking a cheaper retirement option in Jaipur has opened with a highly impressive £2.22m. That's certainly at the top end of expectations for a film starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson plus Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel.
Back in 2003, Calendar Girls kicked off with £1.88m, but the comedy benefited from huge media interest in the real stripping Women's Institute ladies. Marigold Hotel is based on existing material – Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things – but awareness levels are simply not comparable.

Originally shot in 2007, low-budget black comedy Blood Car gets a theatrical release in the UK. Dave finds out if it’s been worth the wait...
Blood Car is the story of Archie Andrews (Mike Brune), a clean living kindergarten teacher and all round nice guy. He lives in the near future, where petrol prices mean that nobody drives and cars fill up car graveyards, where teenagers do what teenagers do.
When he's not educating children or being the unrequited love interest of the owner of the Veg-Table, a little food shack in the middle of nowhere, he's an inventor, working on a wheat-grass engine. It's not coming along very well, so he decides to down bottle after bottle of vodka, accidentally cutting himself and discovering his engine works when he supplies it with blood.
Finally, able to fuel his car for the first time, the women are throwing themselves at him – well,...

Rampart (15)
(Oren Moverman, 2011, Us) Woody Harrelson, Robin Wright, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Ned Beatty, Sigourney Weaver, Ice Cube. 108 mins
Harrelson looks scarily at home as the most corrupt cop in Los Angeles: drinking, smoking, cheating and brutalising his way to notoriety, then stubbornly denying all culpability. It's less a straight cop story than a fragmented study of a – personally as well as professionally – rotten man. There's almost too much in the mix, but it's told with great style and anchored by a fearsomely committed performance.
Safe House (15)
(Daniel Espinosa, 2012, Us) Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga. 115 mins
A spy thriller that gives you what you'd expect: Washington as a suave rogue spy; Reynolds as the rookie who brings him in; frenetic action; double crosses; shifting allegiance; and a bit of waterboarding for kicks.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (12A)

There’s a bit more on offer this week after a relatively lacklustre affair last time around. There’s a couple of action big-hitters, a dash of historical adventure, a magnificent re-release of an old classic and a starry Brit-flick (for the mum’s). A little something to suit all tastes.

The Woman In The Fifth (15)
(Pawel Pawlikowski, 2011, Fra/Pol/UK) Ethan Hawke, Kristin Scott Thomas, Joanna Kulig. 84 mins.
Mysteries abound in this sombre, 1970s-style drama, and so do women. Hawke's emotionally wracked American in Paris is plagued by them – not just the seductress of the title (Scott Thomas) but also his estranged wife and daughter, and the pretty Polish waitress. Plus some dodgy (male) gangster types. If it all seems too good to be true, it is, but this doesn't show its hand till very late on – maybe too late – and maybe too many cards, or too few.
Hadewijch (12A)
(Bruno Dumont, 2009, Fra) Julie Sokolowski, Yassine Salime, Karl Sarafidis. 105 mins.
Boldly drawing connections between (Christian) religious devotion and (Muslim) religious extremism, this radical but naturalistic drama follows a rejected nun whose search for spiritual solace takes her far out of her central Paris comfort zone, and deep into the paradoxes of faith.

Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s Underground Film Distributor index has been seriously updated pretty much for the first time it was launched two years ago.
Previously, the list only included distributors that had released films that were reviewed by Bad Lit. This update now includes films that have screened at underground film festivals, but have not yet been reviewed by this website.
Quite a few distributors already included in the list have added several more underground films to their catalogs, including Breaking Glass Pictures, which has since released Mad World, Brain Dead and Someone’s Knocking at the Door; while Factory 25 recently released Jessica Oreck’s Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo.
New distributors added to the list include Cinevolve; which released Chusy Haney-Jardine’s Anywhere, USA; and Tla Releasing, which has released Alex Orr’s Blood Car and Seth Meredith’s Dante’s Inferno.

It’s podcast time again, and this week we dedicate our entire episode to one of our favourite films of this year so far – the epic Kick-Ass.
Dave and I are joined once again by /Film’s Brendon Connelly as we dissect Matthew Vaughn’s colourful vision of ultraviolence which hits UK cinemas next week. We chat through the wave of expectation for this film, our thoughts on the cast and mull over the firestorm of criticism which will inevitably meet this film head on.
As a special bonus we also introduce a new section to Mouth Off, one in which the three of us choose a film we love but which may have passed the rest of the world by. You can find our discussion at the end of the episode and enjoy the trailers for our picks below.

It’s been a while (nearly a year) since we’ve seen any updates on the Aussie genre film Road Train. At the time, all we knew was that the film was getting ready to head into production but a lot happens in a year including the dropping of a wicked looking trailer for the film.
To refresh your memory on the story:
Four young friends on a camping adventure in outback Australia are run off the road by a mystery road train - a massive three-trailer truck. With their own 4x4 wrecked and the road train stopped, the friends march off to remonstrate with the driver. But there is no one to be found. Suddenly, the silence is broken by the sound of gunshots. A distant figure screams and runs towards them. Are they witnesses to a murder? There’s no time to discuss it. The friends commandeer the road train.

In Alex Orr’s news film, ‘Blood Car,’ it’s the future. About two weeks from now. Gas prices have risen exponentially, to the point, in fact, that even owning a car has become luxury set aside only for the financially elite. As the opening narrator, a suited man eating a bag of chips, tells us, kids still have sex in cars, they just do it in graveyards. Car graveyards.
This is where Archie Andrews comes in. A kindergarten school teacher and vegan by day, he spends his nights coming up with plans for an engine that runs solely on wheat grass. With gas prices rising to more than $30 a gallon, Archie feels he can revolutionize the travel industry if he can just get his wheat grass engine running. Well, you know how these scientist’s plans go. One thing leads to another. Archie cuts his finger. Blood falls on the engine.

So, you made it through Who Can Kill a Child?, Dumplings and À l’intérieur? You can take female body horror centered around pregnancy? Well, Paul Solet’s Grace aims to take the Little Shop of Horrors (or the more recent Blood Car) concept very seriously, viscerally, and bloody. You can take the positive word from where the film debuted at Sundance, or you can watch the redband trailer after the jump to prove it. Not quite Nsfw, but you will get funny looks from the person in the next cubicle.

I am completely torn on Deadgirl. This is one movie that plays very well with a Midnight Madness crowd but at any other time it will not. While watching it I couldn't help but be reminded of last year's movie Blood Car, which I saw at Toronto After Dark. Both movies push buttons and have a good sense of humour. I have since watched Blood Car a few times and I get a kick out of it each time. I just can't see that happening with Deadgirl. It relies too much on jump scares when it wants to be scary while Blood Car really makes no attempt to truly scare you.
In Deadgirl, two high school friends Jt and Rickie discover the body of a chained naked woman in the basement of an old asylum. In stead of releasing the nearly comatose woman Jt decides that they should "keep her...

No, it's not a documentary even though it looks like one, rather it's another vehicle for comedic horror in the same vein as our much beloved Blood Car. "How to Be A Serial Killer is the story of Mike Wilson, a charismatic, educated, and articulate young man who has found his life’s purpose in exterminating people. Mike is determined to spread his message about the joy of serial killing and recruits a lost soul named Bart to be his pupil. Mike leads Bart through the ethics of serial killing as well as teaching him various lessons in disposing corpses, balancing work and play, methods of killing, and many many more. Mike and Bart's curriculum is interrupted when Mikes girlfriend discovers what’s beneath her boyfriend’s charming exterior and Mike and Bart must kill their way out of being discovered by the cops." Yes, it looks whimsical and fantastic,...
