Anne and Steven have made it to Preslin's shop, Steven dons a disguise to gain access to Amboise. The King refuses to push for war with Spain, worrying of the cost of it, and dubious of the help of the English. The Queen Mother is a hugely powerful figure, she still pulls the strings of her son. Steven finally meets up with Amboise, he hands Anne over. His plan works and he learns the Sea Beggar is the Admiral de Coligny, his information is passed to the Huguenots, the attempt was made, but failed. Word gets back to the authorities that the assassination attempt had failed, the death of The Abbot is ordered by Tavannes. His death is blamed on the Huguenots, and the locals believe it to be so. Steven trying to defend the Huguenots,but is turned on and forced to run for his life.
William Hartnell is excellent in his double role, his French accent is a little inconsistent, but it's a fair job. Peter Purves is excellent once again. A special word for the performance of Joan Young too, very charismatic in the role of Catherine de Medici.
Paddy Russell did a fantastic job in directing this episode, first rate, what a shame that there is absolutely no known footage of this serial, big pity.
No monsters, no dazzling effects, no gimmicks, just a story of absolute brilliance, it has to be said 'the don't make 'um like this anymore.' 9/10
