Superb visual effects
mechanoman11 June 2006
I've just watched the American release of this movie ("Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction") on the Discovery Channel. Another reviewer commented on the visuals. I agree with him. All the scenes of the volcano, eruptions, ash, fire, pyroclastic clouds and tidal waves looked very convincing. In fact, I really found myself wondering how they did it. The stories chosen to dramatize this historical event, of real people who lived through the disaster, were well told and interesting. Semi-documentary in style, this TV movie manages to weave in a lot of scientific fact along with the history and drama. I was riveted to my TV. Another well done to BBC.

Excellent

A fact-based account of the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait near Java, an Indonesian island. The eruption and its effects (including tsunamis and a super-hot ash cloud) took over 36,000 lives. The story follows several characters throughout the ordeal, including a Dutch official, his family, and his native clerk; a ship captain, his passengers and crew; a lighthouse keeper and his family; and a Dutch scientist in Indonesia to study the regions volcanoes. Included are narrations from diaries and journals of the survivors. The special effects are pretty good for a film of its kind, and unlike most made-for-TV fare, this docudrama actually has some good acting.

Fantastic Documentary

Warning: Spoilers
I really wish "real" disaster movies like Dante's Peak, Volcano e.t.c would be more like this - and this was supposed to be a documentary/movie combination. Awesome special effects, especially the victims being burned by the pyroclastic cloud. The acting was superb!

The only thing that didn't look "good" was when the Captain saved the ship by "riding" the Tsunami. I'm quite sure that's now what really happened without the boat "falling over" or breaking in half, it just looked... unbelievable. I guess they went with a "special effects" bravery scene, since this movie was already heavy on special effects. There's also a scene where two men tie themselves to a pole to survive a tsunami flood, which also looked a bit fake.

possibly the best docu-drama ever made!

Warning: Spoilers
In 1883 the volcanic island of krakatoa erupted with the most catastrophic results. this story follows the experiences of a dutch family who witnessed the eruption of krakatoa. It also follows the accounts of a missionary who recorded his accounts of the eruption. People thought it was three, small volcanoes on 1 island but through his research he discovers it is 1 giant volcano about to have a massive eruption on a scale noonoe has ever witnessed. The 4th explosion was the largest noise ever recorded. It was heard 6 thousand miles away in Brisbane,Australia! an incerdible story of survival and horrible tragedy of a Dutch family and amazing heroics and quick wit of a ship captain make this a truly great story. I was just absolutely shocked at the catastrophic effects an eruption so far reaching can inflict. a must see!!

NOT a documentary or docudrama.

Warning: Spoilers
Mediocre TV-film that lacked a suspenseful build-up.

To call this a documentary or docudrama is a mistake. Although framed in Verbeek's narrative, the portrayal of actual events is not entirely accurate; while the portrayal of the people involved is heavily fictionised and styled to suit a modern audience. Some of the script and acting was good, but most of it was bad; and far too much emphasis was placed on fictitious drama rather than the actual events. The film could have been saved by special effects, but even these seemed dated lacking the quality CGI standard we now expect. Also there was a lack of attention to detail. For example, Captain Lindemans's ship the SS Governor General Loudon was built in 1875, yet the ship portrayed in the film is clearly a product of the 1895 - 1910 period.

There were one or two nice touches, such as the audio being replaced by a ringing noise to convey the temporary loss of hearing due to the loud explosion, and the scenes aboard Loudon prior to the Tsunami, but in retrospect I would say that I watched this film to the end more out of curiosity about how it was made, rather than because I found it enjoyable. I have to say that it was a wasted opportunity.

Excellent feature length account of this disaster
chris_gaskin1239 May 2006
Although I missed the first half-hour of Krakatoa: The Last Days, I saw the final hour and soon got into it.

It tells the story of the distructuon of Krakatoa blowing its top and the aftermath in its wake. There was massive explosions that could be heard thousands of miles away, tsunamis and a huge cloud of ash from the final explosion.

The lighthouse featured in this gets destroyed by a huge tidal wave and we see how a ship copes on the rough seas. Luckily, all survive.

The special effects in this are fantastic, especially the scenes where Krakatoa is erupting.

Well done to the BBC for bringing us this.

For another version of this disaster, I recommend 1969's Krakatoa, East of Java with Maximilian Schell and Diane Baker.

One of the best docudramas ever made
chimpanzee_boyuk12 April 2007
Who says British special effects are complete rubbish? To be fair they are generally, but this is one of the better dramas in terms of... well... everything! The effects are pretty good (OK, their not spectacular, but at least the director hasn't put too much emphasis on them), very good acting, but the thing I really like about this is the Soundtrack; perfect for the story! The way to make a good docudrama is to focus on the stories of the people who experienced it, translate these with famous actors, and use an effective backdrop to aid the story, and that's just what Krakatoa: The Last Days has done. Forget all that glossy, expensive Hollywood rubbish; this is how a docudrama should be made! 9/10

Krakatoa....a scary fact
Angelus229 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The idea of a volcano isn't very exciting or scary, we just say ...'oh..a volcano'...But this documentary shows Krakatoa, the daddy of all volcanoes and the damage it has done to the world...

The documentary shows the eruption in 1800's and a British families horrific tale of survival from the molten lava and toxic ash that fell from the skies, the after effects of the Volanco that could be seen throughout the world...The narrator did a terrific job in bringing in the audience and the acting was brilliantly done...

The special effects are the key to this documentary and make the situation even more terrifying...

A brilliant documentary.

Krakatoa - a tragedy of volcanic proportions
hd11gc7 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is an excellent account of the events surrounding the eruption of the volcano at Krakatoa and the devastation that followed. Taken from the diaries of survivors it demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and the instinct for survival when this destructive force of nature is unleashed upon them. There are so many poignant moments - the bravery of the ship's captain as he battled the tsunami, the mother who thought she had reached safety only to suffer a cruel blow in the aftermath of the tragedy and the woman who left her home to look for her dog - a decision which saved her life.

Great acting, special effects and direction - unmissable.

Bad !!
terbu2 November 2010
I'm Indonesian, this poor movie i ever watch. Foreign language part is not "Bahasa Indonesia" but "melayu" (malaysian) "javanese" people speaking "melayu" very strange dialect. The people around Krakatau's must be Sundanese not Javanese, west Java is Sundanese, very different between Sundanese and Javanese, both language and culture.

See when earthquake happen what the people do?? very funny, no panic there! So i think this movie never make a survey about Indonesia situation and people..

Specially please understand the west Java people, Indonesia culture (note: Indonesia not Malaysia). When we watch this movie I feel strange with my country and culture.

Typical Hollywood nonsense.
artwk1 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I taped this long-winded docu-drama, and intended to watch it right through. I found much of it moderately interesting, but unfortunately the black-and-white footage of eruptions did not sit well with the technicolor narrative. Was this old footage from the 1930s? If so, why didn't the producers bother to use computer technology to add some colour?

The first action sequence leading up to the tsunami was marred by the waving about of a hand-held camera. This amateurish attempt at realism never, repeat NEVER, approximates to real-life vision, as our eyes flick from one focus to another. They don't pan across a scene, blurring everything in sight.

I struggled on until the ridiculous scene of the ship riding the slow-moving giant wave. This was utter nonsense. A tsunami wave travels at several HUNDRED miles an hour, and over deep ocean is very very very long but quite low in profile. It is only when it approaches land and shallow water that it becomes a high wave. The depiction of the ship somehow remaining on the 45 degree slope of water with its bow pointing up at the sky, without sliding back, was so ludicrous that I gave up and switched off.
