Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #53
kgraovac20 December 2023
Maude's old high school pal Stephanie -- a militant feminist -- visits as the Findlays prepare to host Walter's annual office party in their home.

I love MAUDE but the show could never nail a decent Xmas episode the way ALL IN THE FAMILY did. This is better than the Season 2 Xmas offering and has slightly more humorous moments. Stephanie's book is cheekily titled "Women: Get Out from Under". Steph gifts Maude with a large, framed portrait that is an actual vintage photo of Bea Arthur when she was a teenager. Vivan calls Stephanie a "party poop" several times.

Maude has her annual run-in with a public servant when they come calling for an Xmas bonus. This time it's the paperboy who gets the door slammed in his face but he retaliates at the end. Samantha Harper (Mrs. Bill Macy) and Eddie Carroll reprise their holiday roles as the horny couple who get caught making out during the party.

The Stephanie character is so insufferable even Maude eventually tells her to cool it and that there's a time and a place for everything.

MAUDE is a stellar series but this is one the weakest episodes. 6/10.

Dated! Tedious! Dreary! Out of Place!

Warning: Spoilers
Amazingly this was touched on in an episode of Family Ties in the '80s, when Steven Keaton's old revolutionary hippie friend showed up and stirred Steven up in 'the old ways' and had Steven protesting his daughters' making English muffins for breakfast "not while England still occupies Ireland!" Such was the case with this episode. Maude's old feminist friend (take note, this was '75) was actually asked, requested, ordered to not bring her feminist rants to a Christmas party. Of course, she proceeded to do so.

Walter couldn't make fun of wife (oh, he was actually making fun of his wife, Viv, but according to the friend, he was making fun of ALL women).

Absolute drivel.

Further enhanced by Maude's appearance at the party dressed as Santa Claus. A MAN! This woman, portrayed annoyingly by Neva Patterson, further complained about 'goodwill to men' and 'to all mankind'.

An episode of the '90s TV show, Ellen, with Ellen DeGeneres, would have her attending her girlfriend's father's funeral. She stated this was a funeral and there was a time for taking a stand for someone's rights, and there was a time to grieve and say good-bye. A funeral was no time to protest.

Neither was a Christmas party.
