Hollywood Backstory: The Verdict (2001)

Entertaining episode in the long-running series takes a look at the Sidney Lumet drama THE VERDICT. We get interviews with Lumet, producer Richard Zanuck, star Paul Newman and film critic Leonard Maltin who discuss the power of the film and especially in the lead performance. In just 22-minutes we get a pretty good history of the film from the original screenplay that was thrown out to the various A-list actors who wanted the part. It was great getting to hear from Newman as he discusses the role and how at one point during rehearsals he realized that he simply wasn't ready to go into shooting. There's also a great story dealing with a debate over his character slapping a woman as well as some controversy when the film was released by some lawyers who didn't agree with the film. There's even talk about Newman not winning the Oscar and how the embarrassed Academy made up for it. If you're a fan of THE VERDICT or just this series in general then you'll certainly want to check out this episode.
