To what extent will anyone go in order to protect the person he is infatuated with, is what this episode explores. The person in question is Lilly Rush, one of the most level headed persons in the Cold Case unit. From the moment Lilly examines the picture of Joseph, a dead man, in a case being investigated, she seems fascinating by just looking at his photograph she finds in the file of the case the detectives are working on.

For all practical purposes, Joseph was killed by Corey Lewis, a youth at the Robinson Center for troubled adolescents. Joseph had witnessed Corey kill another teen, Orlando, and has been instrumental in the incarceration of the killer. Joseph dies under strange circumstances, but after his credit card is used for a purchase at a suburban store, the detectives of the Cold Case unit become interested in finding the person who used it.

The Robinson Center was founded by Ted and Jane Robinson, whose own son was killed in a case that involved drug usage. Jane, who seems like a kind woman, has a secret of her own. It involves Corey, and the passion he has awakened in her. in trying to locate Joseph's own brother, Wilder, the investigators are given the address of a farm where he might be holed up. Lilly, going against all reason, visits the country place on her own, something that could have been fatal. What she discovers at the farm will get her into hot water with Lt. Stillman and jeopardizes her career in the force.

The episode was directed by a veteran of the series, Rosann Dawson, and written by Andrea Newman and Liz Garcia, frequent collaborators of the program. Lilly's loyalties and judgment in error are at the center of the story. The only thing that is incomprehensible is a flaw involving the identity of a dead man that, for all purposes, was slain in an act of revenge because he knew too much of a compromising situation involving the Robinsons. There is a problem of credibility about the original police investigation of Joseph's death. We don't want to give that away. We are baffled watching how a grounded Lilly Rush loses her mind because of a carnal attraction, something that is out of character with the detective.

Other than those objections, this chapter showcases Kathryn Morris as Lilly. Danny Pino goes through the show being questioned about the hand that gave the beating to the pervert he took care of the last time we saw him, but to which he will not confess even though it is a case of brutality.

Clearly inspired by "Laura"

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is an homage to the 1944 movie "Laura" starring Gene Tierney as Laura Hunt and Dana Andrews as Detective Mark McPherson. But the gender roles are now reversed: the woman, Lilly Rush, is the detective in this episode, and the man, Joseph Shaw, is the alleged victim. Just as someone else at Laura's apartment (but thought to be Laura) is shotgunned in the face and rendered unidentifiable in the film, so, too, is someone believed to be Joseph shotgunned beyond recognition at his apartment in this episode of "Cold Case." And the detective in both stories first eerily falls in love with the "dead" victim through an image (a painting in the film, a photo in this TV show). Even the way this episode is titled simply "Joseph" is obviously meant to make us think of "Laura." Nice work.
