Barney And Richard Nixon
sambase-3877312 January 2022
When Barney runs for sheriff he essentially becomes Richard Nixon. Or as they used to call Nixon back in the day: "Tricky Dick". In this case it's Tricky Barney!

You know that deep in his heart Barney wants to be sheriff someday. And now is his chance because Sheriff Taylor, expecting a big job offer, didn't file to run in time. So he can't run except as a write-in campaign. That opens the door for Barney who is the only one officially running on the ballot. It's a dream come true! Or is it. Be careful what you wish for, Barney!

This is a pretty good episode. Lots of insight into the two main characters. Some funny moments of course. Some funny moments with the inimitable Floyd The Barber.

Dirty Politics

Andy thinks he is going to get a big time job, so he doesn't apply for the next election. He suggests that Barney try for it. But soon a write-in campaign is forged. Barney uses whatever methods are at his disposal because ego is ego. Anyone out there hear of Joe McCarthy.

For all the people for Barney to backstab.

Another dynamite season 5 classic. No limits to Barney's erratic behavior. The begnning is a redo of "Goodbye Sheriff Taylor" just 11 episodes ago. The Andy leaving scenario was odd and hokey. Even Opie went braindead needing to be told what a tortilla is.

The whole idea of Barney being sheriff is preposterous. Only a lunatic would vote for him. Great Barney put downs by Floyd and Goober.

The group in Andy's home is a hilarious scene. Barney on a power trip seeking group control. He of course is knocked down to size by the funny regulars

In the debate Barney is dumbed down to read like a 1st grader. Always love Aunt Bee's "rabble-rouser & fiddle faddle". Great Goober line asking Andy "Don't you have a jack".

Very good epilogue showing egomaniac tightwad Barney finding new wallpaper.

Another Barney unbelievable episode.

More of Barney's sense of self-exagerated importance. I mean how many times does Andy bail Barney out of situations he got himself into causing trouble for either himself or Andy. This was already the 5th season and Don Knotts was not renewing his contract anyway. He should have been sent off somewhere during the second season. This wasn't the first time he stabbed Andy in the back cate08, there was the episode with Ruta Lee as the "college kid" reporter when Barney reported that the "kid" meaning Andy didn't run a taut ship and was lax. If I were Andy I would have tossed Barney out after this one instead of the usual aw shucks that's ok routine.

Barney Proves his Disloyalty
cate0813 March 2023
After all the many times Andy has bailed Barney out of his incompetent deputying, Barney stabs Andy in the back. I am surprised he had any friends after this election debacle.

The worst part of the episode was when after Andy spoke at the debate, Barney made some vague statement about voting for Andy, seemingly making Mayberry world happy again.

Best line goes to Floyd, "You smell something Barney? Sniffing out crime?" Also, the line from Goober during the debate, "Ain't you got a jack?"

By this time in the series, I truly wish Barney had been voted out of town. Bye, Barney! I won't miss you when you're gone.
