Pilot

My Hero owes a debt to Mork & Mindy.

Ardol O'Hanlon is not much of a stretch from Father Dougal in Father Ted, although less gormless.

In the pilot, Thermoman has rescued medical receptionist Janet during her holidays. Now his human alter ego George Sunday visits the medical centre to get close to Janet.

However the self obsessed Dr Crispin, a television personality also has an eye on Janet.

This was an amusing first episode. In effect George tries to get to grips with human life. Thermoman pops over to New York to get a sharper insight from his more cynical cousin, Arnie.

Both Janet and George have an easy charm.

An amusing enough start.

Earth's very own superhero, Thermoman, aka George, saves the life of Nurse Janet Dawkins, and falls in love with her.

I'll be honest, this show did pass me by during its original run, so I'm watching this completely fresh as it were. So my first impressions of this pilot episode, it's a sweet and amusing start.

I'm finding it hard to see past the character of Dougal here, even in the opening scenes, I genuinely thought it was a Father Ted crossover. I'm sure I'll be won over in an episode or two.

A few amusing moments, I liked the surgery secretary, the scene in the restaurant was funny as well.

Dr. Piers Crispin was an interesting character, I liked the backstory they gave him, and I'd forgotten just how handsome Dennis was back in the day.

Solid, 6/10.

Remember 'My Hero'?

A really successful show for the BBC back in the early 2000's, it's a shame that it hasn't popped up on any of the streaming sites/IPlayer etc (that I know of).

It's well worth a revisit though, because this first episode is a lot of fun, and does, as the previous reviewer has said, owe a lot to 'Mork and Mindy'.

With Ardal O'Hanlon as charming as ever in the main role, and a nice early role for Hugh Dennis in support, this is good fun.

Any chance of a repeat BBC?
