It's rare for a Dominican film to rise above crud. LA CORTINA DEL PALACIO being the exception.
Warm and generous, and made for little to no money, LA CORTINA is an homage to its people. It captures, with more subtlety and less running time than its predecessors, the inherent sweetness of Dominican life, and, importantly, feels like a much needed step in the right cinematic direction for this cinematically disinclined nation. Here is a film with vision and craft, lovingly made in the face of extraordinary lacking.
I am not a shill for this movie. I am a proud, hopeful Dominican.
