Two weeks before filming was scheduled to begin, the lead had still not been cast. One of the cast knew of a young man who frequented a local goth club, who had the right look. The young man was Robert Kersey, and even though he had little previous acting experience, he looked perfect for the part and impressed the director with his natural delivery.
The satanic ritual scene took two long, exhausting days to film, in the dead of Winter. The scene was filmed in an unheated garage and the temperature never climbed above 40 degrees. During most of this time, actor David Snyder was completely naked and covered in syrup-based fake blood. Actor Robert Kersey was nearly naked, as well. Six months later, the cast and crew went back to the garage to re-shoot some footage.
The high school scenes were filmed in a Middle School building in Dover, NH, which had been abandoned. Permission was granted by the town planning office for the cast and crew to use the building for two weekends. Since then, the school has been renovated into an office building.
The kiss scene did not originally contain a kiss. The original scene had the two boys appear as if they were about to kiss, then pull away from each other. However, early showings indicated that the audience felt too frustrated by this, so the two leads proposed altering the scene. Exactly one year to the day after filming the original scene, the kiss was filmed and added in.
