The first sketch is a hilarious Gene Shalit Critics Special, where Shalit, gossip columnist Rona Barrett and Sneak Previews film critics Ebert and Siskel perform songs and sketches.

The main story gets started as Bill Needle is hosting a morning show and his guest is a drunk and drugged out Lola Heatherton plugging her live special to air that night. After a coffee commercial with Dave Thomas as Robert Young and Rick Moranis as hot tempered tennis star John McEnroe, Guy tells Lola that her special is cancelled. Then we get a funny Raging Bull parody with John Candy as the fat version of Jake LaMotta owning a barbeque restaurant.

We are introduced to Gil Fisher(Candy) and his show The Fishin Musician. He is a music and fishing enthusiast who acts like a kindly old uncle. His guest is rock group The Tubes who accompany him on a large mouth bass fishing trip and sing their song "Sushi Girl". Gil gives them all a copy of his book which shows all the fish he caught. Johnny LaRue visits Earl Camembert and hits him up for some cash. Earl gets a false story that Lola had committed suicide and tells the story on the air. Floyd corrects the story. Due to sympathy from Ben Bradlee, Guy reinstates her live special.

Andrea Martin appears as feminist talk show host Libby Wolfson on her show called You!, though Libby is more concerned whether she looks fat or has bad breath. Lola finally appears for her special, drunk and doing a hilarious over dramatic song about being lonely at the top. When she mentions her love affair with Guy, he has her yanked off the air. To fill the time, The Tubes return with an energetic rocker called "Talk To Ya Later"

We get the movie of the week "The Nobel", a spoof of the trashy 1960s film "The Oscar". Dave Thomas portrays a tough talking guy who climbs the ladder of the medical profession through devious means. Funniest scene is Bob Hope telling jokes at the Nobel ceremony. It's fun seeing Dave Thomas in the audience and on stage as Hope.

The final scene shows Lola awakening from a dream in a parody of the "Wizard Of Oz" ending. The only part she dreamed was the disastrous special, since Guy really cancelled it.
