Smallfilms' first children's series to use 3D, stop-motion animation, instead of cut-out drawings.
The idea for the series came when Oliver Postgate saw a small knitted penguin which Gloria Firmin, Peter Firmin's sister had made for Josie Firmin, her niece, and Peter's daughter. Oliver was reminded of a type of French wool called Pingouin, and a series idea was hatched.
