Isnats won First Prize, Dulang Pampelikula at the 52nd Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (2002). The screenplay was a product of Mike's first Ricky Lee workshop (Batch 11 cell group, 1999).
Mike tried to get directors on board and sell the script to studios but was turned down. Making films in 35mm is expensive and he can't even afford film school. Then, DP Jun Aves brought in German-Filipino actor Joel Olaño who was willing to help fund the film that came simultaneously with the 1st Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival (2005) ushering a new era of Filipino digital films and digital filmmaking.
The first Filipino full-length digital film was Still Lives (1999) by Dir. Jon Red. It was Direk Jon who told Mike to direct the film.
Mike wanted Epy Quizon to play the lead character J but he was in the US at the time. Johnny Delgado was initially considered as Rudy the mob boss but he was also out of the country. With the festival coming in fast, Jourdan Sebastian plays the snatcher J while Archi Adamos plays the drug lord Rudy.
