Lighthearted festive laughs.
Sleepin_Dragon9 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Howard's desperately trying to escape Pearl to pick up a Christmas present for Marina, as well as one for Auntie Wainwright, who'll naturally sell it in her shop. Compo's putting on ferret shows, with the hope of raising funds to purchase a special Christmas present for Nora Batty. The trio hunt around a department store in hunt of Nora's Christmas present. Auntie Wainwright is asked to contribute towards the Church collection, much to her irritation. With time running out to collect the perfect gift for Nora, it seems only Auntie Wainwright can save the day.

As always Jean Fergusson was on top form as poor love sick Marina, tragic yet funny, such a good performer. Howard's attempt to give Marina her Christmas present are really funny.

I'd love to know why is Compo spraying himself with what looks like Miss Dior? How beauty counters have changed over the years.

The location used truly is glorious it's a beautiful place, and the whole 80's vibe makes me feel wonderfully nostalgic.

A really funny ending, I love the look on Howard's face when Nora Batty is opening Marina's intended Christmas present, the look on her face is a picture too.

A really tender scene between Ivy and Nora, talking about their deceased husbands, a really touching moment. It fitted into the episode well. I feel the smiles from the cast were all genuine. 7/10

A present for Nora
Prismark1026 December 2016
I used to look forward to the longer festive editions of the Last of the Summer Wine but they never reached the heights of Getting Sam Home and started to feel padded.

Compo does not want know what to buy Nora Batty for Christmas, he puts on a ferret show to raise funds but the ferrets run loose.

Compo visits Auntie Wainwright who tries to sell him furniture. Clegg and Seymour end up buying something but not Compo. The trio visit a department store but do not have much luck in the perfume counter.

Meanwhile Howard has got Marina a Christmas present but needs to figure out a way of passing it over to her. Compo meanwhile got a hat with flowers for Nora which becomes waterlogged in the pub and then burnt when he tries drying it.

When they all eat Christmas dinner at the cafe, Compo decides he will pass off Howard's present to Marina as his gift to Nora. Well you can imagine what kind of items Howard would buy Marina!

As I said it just felt too run of the mill. I liked the visit to a proper department store rather than a quirky shop like Auntie Wainwright's which truth be told got dull rather quickly.

We all know she is a mean old lady who will sell tat to anyone. When Auntie Wainwright mentions to Edie when she tries to get her to give money to charity that she once donated 55, I knew she meant 1955.

The standout moment to me was when Ivy and Nora in the cafe talk about Wally and Sid and how they still cook for two. Nora feeling guilty that people thought she kept Wally malnourished when he would actually eat like a horse.

drags on a bit
ericparsons-088743 January 2022
This is not a patch on "crums" as it drags on it would have been better if this episode had been cut down to about 30 minutes as certain scenes are dragged out

there are some good moments though such as Compo in the upmarket department store trying to find a Christmas present for Nora for £2 ! Upsetting the snooty sales assistants and the security staff and Howard up a ladder decorating his Christmas tree when Compo knocks on the window causing Howard to fall off and demolish the Christmas tree Howard trying to deliver his Christmas present to Marina without Pearl finding out is fairly amusing.

This episode ends much the same as "crums" with a Christmas party for the main cast this time in the cafe.
