Lynley and Havers investigate a young woman's death
blanche-27 November 2012
In "Chinese Walls," Lynley and Havers investigate the murder of a young woman, Emily Proctor, who is found in the park with knife-type wounds. In looking at her life, the two find out that Proctor was a promising law student working for a barrister, Tony Wainwright. However, when they questioned Wainwright, they found out Emily had quit.

Emily had gone to work in the sex industry, it turns out, for her half-sister with whom she had been separated. Her sister ran the video porn site. Havers and Lynley suspect one of her regular clients, but the list of suspects grows the more they learn. They also learn about a murder 14 years earlier which may be connected.

Good mystery, even though my sister and I figured out the whole thing rather quickly. That was because of the work my sister does and also from seeing and reading thousands of detective stories and mysteries over the years. It's very well done.

On the personal side of things, Lynley and Helen have decided to be friends. We'll see where this is going.

Good entry into the series, with Lynley in a better mood than the last two episodes.

A cracking mystery.

Lynley and Havers are on the case of the murder of a young woman, who had recently left her job at a law firm.

It's a very good mystery, I would expect no less from the pen of the awesome Ed Whitmore. A family tragedy is interwoven into a story of hatred and sex.

Set against the smart settings of the legal professions, it's all smart suits and tidy offices, but underneath all that lies a totally different world.

David Yelland is the class act here for me, he has a massive on screen presence.

Shaun Parkes is almost criminally underused as Winston, always enjoy his scenes, he's a fun, large character, who deserved more screen time, he's excellent here.

There is real quality here, it's very good, 8/10.

The world of barristers
safenoe2 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Here we see a Queen's Counsel who represents the exploited in third world countries so he has a social conscience. But he has a criminal past, being convicted for having sex in a public place and other misdemeanors. His loyal and ruthless Clerk of Chambers does everything (and then some) to protect and advance his career, and will stop at nothing to achieve this. Clerks also usually get 5% of the cut from briefs, so it's not a bad earner. In this episode one of his former pupils is found murdered. There's a suggestion there was a romantic link with the QC. The episode features the grieving parents with something to hide, a step daughter, a video business in the suburbs.

I like The Inspector Lynley Mysteries very much, and this along with The Last Detective and Rosemary and Thyme were series from the noughties that deserved a better run. Inspector Lynley deserved more than six seasons.

Investigating the death of Emily Proctor...
Doylenf7 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
In this well-written, fast-moving British series, NATHANIEL PARKER and SHARON SMALL (as Inspector Lynley and Sgt. Havers) investigate the mysterious death of a young woman.

As in all of these crime stories, their investigation is full of lots of red herrings (a la Agatha Christie), wherein there are a substantial number of suspects, a few of whom seem to be slightly unhinged.

The plot ingredients include an abusive step-father, a mistreated woman protecting her innocent sister, a man whose sweetheart was killed just before their wedding and who is suspected of having a hand in this latest death, and a woman seeking revenge on any woman who wants to marry the man she admires.

It's all done very effectively with clue after clue being examined skillfully by the probing Inspector Lynley, played with the right mixture of sensitivity and determination by Nathaniel Parker.

Enjoyable episode is well worth watching with good insight into human character traits.

Wheres the "chinese?"

Something of an oddity, given that Lynley sleeps with his ex wife during the investigation which leaves him late for the office along with the issues that come out (lost baby/child) and all of that. Its unlikely that the man would smile when declaring "I cant cope either" in response to the ex. The mystery is quite simple if the Inspector could keep his mind on the job. The unsolved murder of a female years earlier is the main clue to why "emily" was murdered, thus leaving a very very short list of possible murderers. An interesting episode but real police work cant be anything like this!
