Broadcast in 1969, this might be a series that reflected Harold Wilson's white heat of technology.

It has a powerful title sequence, representing a corporate Britain of ambitious go getting people.

The first episode has David Main (John Stride) as an ambitious solicitor in London who returns to Leeds to defend the son of a Yorkshire tycoon on a criminal charge.

It is a case of if you can afford to have the better solicitors and barristers, you can get a more favourable outcome at court, in contrast to the legally aided client.

At the end the police thought they had a ironclad case but are left disappointed.

Main comes into contact with a partner of a Leeds firm who would not give Main an opportunity for a partnership. Now he gets to prove his worth.

The episode is really about Main. He is tough and resourceful. He says he is into the law to make money but finds himself pricked by his conscious. There is a secondary case he takes on. A man accused of theft but who has spent 18 hours day on various jobs working to provide for his family and newborn baby. To make sure they can make ends meet but the baby died and he might go inside.

There is a soap opera element to The Main Chance. He has a turbulent relationship with his wife Julia (Kate O'Mara) and they are on the brink of separation.

Even though the episode is over 50 years old, shot in black and white, it did not seem that dated.
