While Hollywood is still fixated on "The Ring" — the sequel "Rings" is now shooting, and takes place thirteen years after the first movie — the franchise's original director Hideo Nakata has moved on, continuing to build his filmography with genre fare like "Chatroom," "Chaos," "Kaidan," and more. His latest is once again bringing more spooky stuff, this time to the hallowed halls of the theater. The first teaser trailer for "Gekijourei" has arrived (according to IMDb the English title is "Stageghost"), and the story follows some actresses who find themselves the target of mysterious, unexplained accidents at a theater, that undoubtedly have some scary origins. And for those of you who are followers of Japanese girl pop group AKB48, the film's lead actress is member Haruka Shimazaki. "Gekijourei" opens in Japan on November 21st. Watch below. One of the benefits of flying overseas on an international airline, at least for a movie geek, is that the in-flight movies are recent movies from all over the world. This past holiday season, I visited family and was spoiled by Singapore Airline's in-flight entertainment system* with a bevy of new Asian films that I know won't be released in the United States for a while. Better yet, I had 22 hours each way to watch them. So I watched plenty. When you're already there and you write about film, why not write about it?
This is my own In-Flight Asian Film Festival, listed in the order of my preference. All movies are 2010 releases in their native countries, unless otherwise noted.

Ok, so we've seen the poster and the stills for the next chiller coming out of Japan, Hiroshi Takahashi's latest spook-fest Kyôfu. Now how about some good old fashioned trailer action? Mind you, there are no subtitles, but hey, the language of fear is universal!
For those of you following along the steps of the "J-Horror Theater" franchise, the sixth installment in the series (the other five films being Hideo Nakata's Kaidan, Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Retribution, Takashi Shimizu's Reincarnation, Norio Tsuruta's Premonition, and Masayuki Ochiai's Infection), Hiroshi Takahashi's Kyôfu, is getting set to make its debut in Japan this July. To help you gear up for this auspicious occasion, be sure to also visit the official Kyôfu website.
There are no details available about the movie just yet, but we'll let you know when something more meaty comes our way.
Check out the trailer below courtesy of Gomorrahy.

We told you about Hiroshi Takahashi's latest Japanese spook-fest Kyôfu a few weeks ago and even showed you a few stills from the flick to get you into the long black-haired spirit of things. Ready for the one-sheet? No? Well, here it is anyway!

The official website for Hiroshi Takahashi‘s Kyofu (terror, horror, fear, fright - take your pick) has been updated with a trailer for the film.
Takahashi was the screenwriter for Hideo Nakata‘s “Ring”, the 1998 film which launched the J-horror wave that had Japanese teenagers biting their fingernails and routinely screaming “yada yada!” for several years afterward. Most would agree that particular wave has been pretty much kaput for a good while now, but don’t tell that to producer Takashige Ichise, who keeps finding ways to get worldwide distribution for the “J-Horror Theater” series of horror films he’s been involved with from the beginning. As the trailer shows, the series includes Masayuki Ochiai’s “Infection”, Norio Tsuruta’s “Premonition”, Takashi Shimizu’s “Reincarnation”, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Retribution”, and Hideo Nakata’s “Kaidan”. Kyofu is intended to be the sixth entry in the series.

From the writer of The Ring comes an experiment which gives me some serious Dreamscape vibes.
As we previous reported, Kyôfu is being promoted as the sixth and final movie in the "J-Horror Theater" (J horâ shiatâ) series - the five previous movies being Hideo Nakata's Kaidan, Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Retribution
(Sakebi), Takashi Shimizu's Reincarnation (Rinne), Norio Tsuruta's
Premonition and Masayuki Ochiai's Infection (Kansen).

Is anybody really still watching J-horror anymore? I don't know about you guys, but we've pretty much had our fill of spooky little girls dressed in white with long black hair. Even our own Andrew Kasch only gets a half a chub when a new Japanese flick comes out, and that's really saying something!

We've just been informed by our pal The Gomorrahizer that a website for The Ring's Hiroshi Takahashi's newest j horror film, Kyôfu, has gone live. We've also been shown some first stills which are quite a sight.

Tokyo Theatres Co. Inc. (Tôkyô Teatoru K.K.) plans to release Kyôfu
theatrically in Japan in July.

Without so much as a whisper of PR, horror maestro Hideo Nakata’s period scare movie Kaidan has just slipped quietly out on R1 DVD via Liongate entertainment. The artwork for the DVD is surpringly sympathetic to the original, though we couldn’t help but notice someone at LG could'nt resist having a go at least once with that special Photoshop - “add more blood!!” - button of theirs. Gore hounds take note - even though they've subtly named dropped "Ringu" on the cover - Kaidan marks a departure from Nakata’s previous films, going more for classical themed chills, rather than an all out scare fest. Synopsis: Years ago, a debt collector was slain by a samurai. Before falling to his death, the debt collector placed a curse on the samurai who went on to kill his wife and himself.

This is the first dvd release post we've done in a while because there's been quite a dry spell over the last month or so. Well not this week! There a few Quiet Earth faves hitting the shops this week so lets go through them.
First up is the short film comp, Tokyo!, (review here) featuring vignettes from Michele Gondry, Bong Joon-ho, and Leos Carax. I've heard mixed things about the film so I'm looking forward to checking it out for myself.
Next up is Fred Durst's The Education of Charlie Banks which comes to us from Anchor Bay. We've been eying this indie throwback for a while now.
Also out this week are three sweet Asian titles, Hideo Nakata's Kaidan , Minoru Kawasaki's Kaiju extravaganza Monster X Strikes Back, and Elliott Hong's 1982 classic They Call me Bruce?.
And how could we forget, The Asylum's Transmorphers: Fall of Man DVD!

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the Japanese chiller Kaidan on U.S. DVD June 30. It’s the latest venture into ghostly territory by director Hideo Nakata, who helmed Ringu, Ringu 2 and the American The Ring Two.
Originally announced as part of producer Taka Ichise’s J-horror Theater series, Kaidan was not officially released under that banner when it opened in Japan in August 2007. Based on a tale from the 19th century, it tells the story of a young man who accidentally injures his teacher wife, leading to her death. He then takes up with one of her students, little knowing that as an infant, he was placed under a curse, and the ghost of his dead spouse begins haunting him. The movie will be presented in 16x9-enhanced widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio (both subtitled Japanese and English) and no special features currently announced. Retail...
