- Victoria meets the Collins family. Roger Collins is disturbed to learn that Burke Devlin is back in town.
- At Collinwood, Victoria is greeted by matriarch Elizabeth Collins-Stoddard. Elizabeth's younger brother Roger, having previously expressed concern about inviting a stranger into their home, avoids meeting Vicki. Elizabeth tells Vicki about the house and the family. Victoria is to be governess to Roger's son David. There are not many visitors to Collinwood, but Elizabeth hopes Vicki will be friends with her teenage daughter Carolyn. Meanwhile, Carolyn dances with a man at the Blue Whale pub and makes Joe Haskell jealous. Vicki takes a walk and meets Roger on the cliff. He is terrified when Vicki mentions she met Mr. Devlin at the train station earlier that evening.—L. Hamre
- Victoria has arrived at the Collinwood mansion at the top of Widow Hill, where she is met by the coldly efficient Elizabeth Collins-Stoddard. After demanding to see the letter she wrote (as proof of Victoria's identity), Elizabeth tells Vicki to wait in the drawing room while she fetches tea. Elizabeth tells Vicki a little about the history of the house, but when Vicki tries to learn more about David, the boy she'll be caring for, Elizabeth is a little close-mouthed, saying only that David is different from any boy Vicki might have known.
At the Blue Whale Elizabeth's daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Nancy Barrett), is cutting a rug with the local boys while Burke and Strake look on. Strake says Carolyn is "a real firecracker". Carolyn's boyfriend, Joe Haskell (Joel Crothers), gets jealous of her dancing with everyone else and starts a fight. Burke breaks up the fight and orders Joe to take Carolyn home before the police arrive. Before they leave Burke tells Joe to come back later and meet with him.
Back at the house, Elizabeth shows Vicki her room. Vicki asks why Elizabeth offered her the job, and is told that Roger knew someone at the foundling home who recommended her. They are interrupted by the front door slamming and Elizabeth goes to investigate. It is Carolyn returning from her date. Carolyn feels imprisoned in the house, and tells Elizabeth she's tired of trying so hard and not having a good time. She tells Elizabeth what happened and Elizabeth is shocked by Joe's behavior. Carolyn tells how she longs to run away but doesn't want to leave Elizabeth alone, and Elizabeth tells her about Vicki's arrival.
Vicki goes for a walk by the cliff and meets Roger. Roger tries to be civil toward her until she mentions Burke Devlin. He becomes visibly shaken and runs off. Vicky returns to the house and finds Elizabeth alone in the sitting room playing a mournful tune on the piano, then suddenly breaking down into tears. Unsure of what to do, Vicki returns to her room.
