Another bumper edition- I hereby pledge never to write several 2000 word reviews a week while neglecting this beautiful little column- with three weeks worth of viewing listed below.
An added element to the Film Diary this time around is the sub-challenge A Disney A Day, instigated at the behest of my girlfriend, who discovered that between us we now own every Disney home release- except the somewhat controversial Song of the South (which, despite featuring one of Disney’s most released soundtrack songs, is yet to see a DVD release)- and has decided that it would be a missed opportunity not to watch all of them as quickly as possible. Seems my spirit may have rubbed off there a little…
The count so far: 101 Films
Anyway, into three figures now, and catching up to the 1 film a day rate (though that’s slow for me). Read on, lovely Diary...

Arrivederci Millwall, a largely forgotten British t.v. drama from 1990, has been repackaged and released alongside lads mag classic The Football Factory by Vertigo Films. It is cut from the same cloth, mostly, as Alan Clark’s The Firm but focuses its attention on a group of football fans leading up to – and during – the World Cup of 1982. There are political and sociological themes and sub-plots at play for added weight.
Is there a dewy-eyed nostalgia present in re-releasing these sorts of films? Awaydays and The Firm are recent films looking back with blood-tinted glasses. Sure, there’s more than a whiff of the 1980s these days, and not just in terms of music and fashion. Are we present in a “commodius vicus of recirculation”, to quote James Joyce.

He's already filming his final appearances as Michael Scott on The Office, and Steve Carell is quickly filling up his schedule as he moves on from TV star to full-time movie actor. One of the project he's had lined up since last fall is Burt Wonderstone, a comedy about a magician who has to rediscover his love of the trade when he's overshadowed by younger competition. WIth the project set to start shooting in the fall, it now finally has a director. THR reports that Charles McDougall, who has directed Carell on several episodes of The Office, will take over as director. McDougall has two previous feature directing credits, the 1990 football hooligan film Arrivederci Millwall and 1999's horror film Heart. But for the most part he's had a strong TV career, helming episodes of Queer As Folk, Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives and of course The Office.
