- A fleeing murderer's charm enables him to enlist the unwitting aid of several law-abiding citizens in his efforts to elude the Highway Patrol.
- Irv Desmond is being hotly pursued by Dan Mathews and his officers for the murder of a pharmacist during a failed holdup. However, his handsome appearance and his pleasant personality enable him to stay just ahead of his pursuers by enlisting the unwitting aid of an elderly couple, a brickyard foreman, and the brickyard's secretary Susan Keefe. The somewhat smitten Ms. Keefe even accepts Desmond's invitation to lunch at a roadside diner, unaware that Desmond has already assaulted the foreman during a holdup. Dan and Sergeant Johnson learn from the foreman that Desmond is traveling with Ms. Keefe and that the two may still be nearby. They find the car parked at a roadside diner, but Desmond spots them and forces Ms. Keefe and a diner counterman to try to help him escape one more time. A tense confrontation results in which Sergeant Johnson's gun is trained on Desmond and Desmond's gun is trained on Dan.—Sam Spear
- Synopsis - The Search Patrolman Norton discovers the abandoned car Irv Desmond stole, Dan Mathews and Sgt. Johnson meet Norton, decide to split up, cover the nearby farm town, alerting all of Desmond's pharmacist- murder and to be on the lookout for such a man considered armed and dangerous.
Desmond is nearby as he watches Dan enter and exit the café, with gun in hand, he has been traversing the area on foot, he tucks his gun away, buttons his coat, enters the café. Small talk abounds and Desmond is able to hitch a ride with customers Sam and Ellie Brown, who take him as far as the Medford intersection.
Dan goes back to the café, finds out a guy like Desmond got a ride with the Browns. Dan catches up with the Browns, checks their safety while Desmond gets work at a cement works, with office worker Susan Keefe prepping him for work with miserable foreman Grundy.
Miss Keefe accepts a lunch invitation with Desmond, who robs the company safe, knocks out Grundy, gets in the car with Miss Keefe, heads to lunch. Dan and Johnson are alerting other business owners of Desmond, and stop by the cement works, find Grundy, learn about Desmond and Keefe.
Desmond is sweet talking Miss Keefe at lunch when the HP notices the Keefe car, Desmond pulls his gun on the café counterman, telling him to sit in the booth with Keefe and pretend they work together.
Dan sends Johnson around the back while he enters the café, Desmond is aproned behind the counter, Dan points his gun at the man in the booth, orders the couple to stand, verifies their employment, tells them to drop their hands, Johnson has his gun on Desmond, Dan tells Johnson to take him, shooting Desmond, as he drew his gun.
Johnson asks Dan how he knew who was who, Dan replies the man in the booth was too nervous, said he was a laborer, but his face is pale as a ghost. Keefe told by Dan that he was wanted for murder, Keefe is surprised, Dan retorts, "Yeah, I know, he seemed like such a nice guy."
