Heroes: Nothing to Hide slowly provides some details to main characters
tavm7 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Peter dreams of his former patient Charles Deveraux from when he was a nurse and tells him he can fly. He then wakes up and hears knocking. It's his girlfriend and Deveraux's daughter, Simone. She tells him her father died a few hours ago. Meanwhile, Peter's brother Nathan is having brunch with a reporter at his mansion with his mother and his wife who is confined to a wheelchair and has been for about six months. Peter comes in and embellishes a story about how his brother went to Vegas to find a female doctor to treat Peter's "mental illness" to explain reporter's question of Nathan's time with a woman there. That woman, Niki, wakes up from her defeat at the hands of her ex-husband who knocked her out by phasing through her. She calls Nathan for help in finding her son but Nathan declines. She then goes to a friend who she tells about her alter ego. It's about this time that her ex is on the road with their son when he arrives at a scene of a crash where there's some fire involved. Hiro and Ando also arrive. As the ex phases through a car door to save an unconscious passenger and then carries it out, Hiro stops time to save the ex from getting killed in the explosion. Afterwards, all go their separate ways. Matt the cop is assigned plainclothes to help in a case involving comatose bodies. Despite some of his mind not working properly, he does well enough to get another chance on a detective exam. Unfortunately, in reading the mind of the man who tells him about this he also finds out this man's been fooling around on his wife and punches him out! In Texas, Claire's friend has found the tape of Claire's quick recovery from accidents in his bedroom so no need to worry about anybody finding out. However, Claire's little brother finds it and plays it on his computer just as Claire finds out. Little brother runs with Claire and friend after him and locks himself in the family van. Claire explains to sibling why she doesn't want parents to find out as brother finally unlocks door and gives Claire back tape. Finally, as Niki's ex and son Micah arrive at motel at night, Micah, alone, goes to an out-of-order pay phone and, as he touches it, miraculously gets phone to work as he calls his mother. Niki answers as her bad self startling Micah who asks for her real mother. The bad self, who identifies herself as Jessica, mentions some terms of which Niki comes back just when the ex comes over to Micah. As Micah hangs up phone his dad asks who it was. Macah answers that he was just pretending to call and, sure enough, as the ex takes the phone it is once again out of order...Not too much action but still compelling as we see revelations of Nathan's family life for the first time here. Nice intro of Rena Sofer as his wife. Loved her since I first saw her as Bonnie Haines in Ed. Also worth mentioning is the original Shaft, Richard Roundtree, as the bedridden Charles Deveraux. Quite effective in his all-too-brief scene, both here and in the first episode. Almost didn't recognize him without his mustache! Overall, an intriguing episode that should provide more excitement for next week.

The One Where Lyle Finds Out...

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this episode. It's pretty good.

In this episode, Lyle Bennett discovers Claire's sister after seeing a video of her trying to kill herself, well she wasn't actually trying to kill herself, she just wanted to see how indestructible she was. She tries desperately to make sure Lyle doesn't tell anyone her secret. Meanwhile, Hiro ends up saving a woman from her burning car, with the help of D.L. I love how everyone's stories intertwined. Isaac is missing, Matt helps the FBI, and Nathan strategies how to win his congressional election.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.

Chapter Seven 'Nothing to Hide'
Prismark1020 December 2020
I like the organic way some of the Heroes intertwine with each other.

Micah wants his dad D.L. to be more heroic. D.L. gets his chance when he saves a woman from a burning car. However he gets an assist from Hiro who just happens to be passing through.

Claire's brother finds a videotape of her getting injured and then healing herself. He thinks his sister is a freak and her secret might become public.

Matt is getting drawn deeper into looking for a mysterious serial killer called Sylar. He also hears what his partner really thinks about him.

The episode slowly provides details of some of the characters. Nathan Petrelli's wife's disability might be the reason why he fooled around in Las Vegas. Although when a journalist gets close to the truth Peter helps out to divert blame.

There is a fractious relationship between D.L. and his estranged wife Niki Sanders. You really do think they have a volatile passive/aggressive link.

When reviewing an episode so many years after its broadcast. You get a different context when further information comes to light much later. Tim Kring was proud of his diverse cast. Scratch a little deeper and he failed to protect actor Leonard Roberts who played D.L. Allegedly he had an unhappy experience with his co-star and she does not come out well from it. As someone later remarked to Roberts. The hot blonde will get to keep her job, the black actor will not.

Not connecting
jodi-4452829 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have tried for six episodes to get into this series. It has a great cast. Good premise. And a lot of positive chatter. But I just can't connect to the story or the characters. Part of my problem with this is that the timeline jumps around way too much without explanation. It takes too long to figure out at what point something is happening: present, past or future. Like the artist being killed early in the story. But then he keeps showing up in the series. Just takes me out of the flow of the concept too much. I have to go back and re-watch parts of the previous episode, and I'm just not going to invest that much time. And the 'bad' characters are pretty easy to spot right off. Like Eden. Why would Mihander trust her, based solely on what she's saying about her relationship with his father. As mistrustful as he is, I just don't believe he would volunteer everything to a complete stranger. Claire's father is creepy from his first scene, although they pretty much tell you he is a bad guy.

Also, most of these characters are selfish, greedy, and/or angry people who do nothing to earn the title of hero. Not sure how they are tied in with the series title, other than Hiro, from Japan. Hopefully, as the show goes on, better parts of these people will surface. But for now, there are too many questions for me and too much 'clutter' in the story line.

Frankly, I don't 'get' Niki's 'power' at all. How can that be an asset or a plus?

I'm giving this high of a rating simply because of the cast. Love Milo in everything. All of the cast do a great job with their material, but the show just isn't resonating with me.
