- Into female sports columnist PJ's close all-male circle of serious baseball fan friends comes Bobby, a rival columnist who fits right in. Stephanie (PJ's only female friend) delights in tomboyish PJ considering him for romance.
- P.J. Franklin (Jordana Spiro) knows a lot about sports. As a beat reporter for the Sun-Times, covering the Cubs, she notices a lot of similarities between love, dating, and baseball. Two of her closest friends, Mike Callahan (Jamie Kaler) and Kenny Morittori (Michael Bunin), are the solid infielders of the team. Her brother, Andy (Jim Gaffigan) is only good as a relief pitcher, since he is kept on such a short leash by his wife. She has two close friends that she made it to the show with through their college years, Brendan "Brendo" Dorff (Reid Scott) and Stephanie Layne (Kellee Stewart). As the story opens, they have gathered for the weekly poker game at P.J.'s. Andy only has 90 minutes to play, and Brendan has broken up with Wendy (again). Both of these incidents are as predictable as playing Metallica on a heavy metal radio show or having deep-dish pizza and beer at a party. Brendan asks to crash at P.J.'s, which he has done before.
The new shortstop for their softball team happens to be a beat reporter for the Tribune, Bobby Newman (Kyle Howard). P.J. is not impressed at first, putting him at the bottom of the batting order. This is because either he loaned P.J. a pen that didn't work or that he might suck at softball. Stephanie asks P.J. about Bobby, thinking he might be good for her. As long as P.J. doesn't take him to meet the guys and let them scare him away.
As the boys gather at P.J.'s for the Bears game, Brendan confesses that he did not go home with the girl at the bar; he got a call from Wendy. Brendan says nothing happened. Apparently, Brendan got a booty call. The girl kind. A girl booty call means that the woman needs the "hold me, I need somebody" emotional fix. Fortunately, P.J. might get the guy booty call, as Bobby asks her out for a drink. At Crowley's, the gangs regular hangout, the drink is going great until Kenny and Mike show up. They convince Bobby to join them at a new barbeque place, leaving P.J. alone and wondering what happened.
The next day, she asks Stephanie for help. Stephanie tells her, "P.J., you're hot. It wouldn't kill you to strut your stuff once in a while." P.J. agrees to invite Bobby to the poker game, and Stephanie will help her pick out an outfit, do her hair, make some hors d'oeuvres, and advises letting him win at poker. (Well, 3 out of 4 will happen, anyway.)
Although the boys are surprised by P.J.'s outfit, makeup, and mushroom caps, Bobby enjoys himself at the game. However, at the end of the night, Bobby takes a ride home from Kenny and Mike. Brendan gets a call from Wendy and heads there, over P.J.'s protests. Just as P.J. has had her limit with this girl booty call, Bobby calls and wants to have a drink. P.J. invites him back up and kicks Brendan out. Although Bobby says he only came up for a drink, P.J. certainly didn't mind it when he kissed her. She invites him to see her baseball card collection. Apparently, its in the bedroom.
Bobby wants to promise her that whatever happens tonight that they'd be friends. P.J. seems to be ignoring this as she tries to rip his clothes off. However, he is starting to freak out over her aggressiveness. He wants P.J. to try and "stop him" and wonder "if this is only a one-night stand." She tries to accommodate, but it comes off as a bit of teasing. This effectively ends their evening, just in time for Brendan to return. P.J. is not happy to say the least because "there's no referee, no umpire, nobody to call a foul or throw a flag." Brendo apparently confronted Wendy on whether they were getting back together. Their night ended abruptly as well.
