- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters a sort of hothouse and sees Tipton seated in a high-backed rattan chair next to a small table with some leaves and sand on it. Only Tipton's left arm is visible to viewers] You sent for me, sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: He solved the problem in his own primitive way, Mike.
- Michael Anthony: Sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: [Pointing to the table] There.
- [a chameleon scampers under a leaf to hide]
- Michael Anthony: Oh, a chameleon. I hadn't noticed him, sir.
- John Beresford Tipton: That's the idea. Protective coloration blending in with the ever-changing background of life.
- Michael Anthony: A case in point, sir: to survive, we must all adapt ourselves to change.
- John Beresford Tipton: A case in point. However, Mike, with the human animal, it's no longer just a struggle for physical survival, but a struggle for emotional fulfillment.
- [Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]
- John Beresford Tipton: Let's see how our next millionaire adapts to change.
- [Anthony accepts the envelope, bows, glances at the chameleon, and departs]
- Michael Anthony: [Reviewing a case history, to the viewers] I had no way of knowing how John Beresford Tipton singled out his millionaires. But I did know, depending on the individual's adaptability,
- [pulling an envelope from the folder]
- Michael Anthony: this could lead to success or tragedy.
- [first lines]
- Michael Anthony: .
- [to the viewers]
- Michael Anthony: My name is Michael Anthony and until his death, I was executive wecretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who had the strange hobby of giving away $1,000,000. One million dollars, tax-free, to an individual who had never met him, who indeed had never heard of him. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre estate. Mr. Tipton was a man of amazingly wide interests - so wide that one never knew what to expect when called into his presence.
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony is sitting on the stairs outside the apartment of Carol Wesley, awaiting her return. She appears and heads toward her door, key in hand] Miss Carol Wesley?
- Carol Wesley: Yes.
- [after a pause]
- Carol Wesley: Oh, look, I mailed out a check for those dresses this morning, so you... you can tell the department store they needn't keep bothering me about that bill.
- Michael Anthony: This isn't about a bill you owe. You might say it's about something due you. My name is Michael Anthony.
- [Anthony opens his briefcase and withdraws a check, which he hands to Carol]
- Michael Anthony: As you'll see, this check is payable to you, Miss Wesley.
- Carol Wesley: [Really taken aback] One million dollars?
- Michael Anthony: Tax-free. And there are only two restrictions,
- [Returns to his briefcase and removes a document]
- Michael Anthony: as explained in this agreement. You are to tell no one how or where you got the money; no one must know the exact amount of the gift, except your husband, in case you marry. Otherwise, you're free to do with it as you please.
- Carol Wesley: [all aflutter] Wait, wait. Do you mean to tell me that I can do anything I want with one million dollars?
- Michael Anthony: Anything a million dollars can do.
- Carol Wesley: [Carol signs and Anthony returns the pledge to his briefcase] Oh, oh, oh... oh, Mr. Anthony... Mr... . Mr. Anthony, the curtain's going up!
- Michael Anthony: I beg your pardon?
- Carol Wesley: Oh, Mr. Anthony!
- [steps toward Anthony; hugs him and spins him around so that his face is on camera. Anthony's expression is one of surprise and puzzlement]
- Carol Wesley: Thank you!
- [kisses Anthony's left cheek]
- Carol Wesley: Thank you!
- [starts toward her apartment door, then spins to face Anthony again]
- Carol Wesley: Thank you!
- [enters her apartment screaming with joy]
- Michael Anthony: [Smiling to himself] Thank you, Miss Wesley.
