An Anna Moffo gem
La Sonnambula is not one of Bellini's best plot-wise, but I love the sleepwalking scenes and the music. This is a gem. Maybe it does have a couple of flaws, like with some of the acting where it is either aimless or over-exaggerated(particularly in the chorus), but at the same time you do find yourself entranced. The picture and sound are not the best but they are at least acceptable and the black and white is crisp and unobtrusive. The costumes are sumptuous and the sets while a little cardboard-like have their good moments as well. Visually though it's the images that captivate, especially in the sleepwalking scenes, the first one being like a dream sequence with positively sparkling white images on the black background and a dance that is almost surrealistic in look, and the second made interesting by Moffo's very eerie gaze and the idea of dreams, illusion and the sense of nothingness with the withered flower in her fist not being there. Musically, it is also superb, with lively orchestral playing and Bruno Bartoletti's usual sensitivity and attention to lush textural balances. Danilo Vega is a very charming and vibrantly sung Elvino, and Plinio Clabassi is perfect as the Count. Lisa is also bright and eager, but the best asset is easily Anna Moffo's Amina. A enchanting-looking woman with a graceful and affecting presence, she possesses a rich, beautiful voice with soaring high notes and an impressive agility that you don't find a lot with people her age at the time(24). All in all, a very well done Sonnambula with a wonderful Moffo. 10/10 Bethany Cox
