Both dull and obvious

"Mister Clay, Mister Clay, Who Are You Going To Kill Today?". That's the rhyme that some pupils in a boys' school have devised, aimed at their nervous young teacher who seems unable to enforce discipline in his class. When the most unruly of his pupils is found dead after being locked in a closet, people at the school start wondering: did Mister Clay finally go over the edge?

This is the third episode in the "Time For Murder" series, and it's easily the weakest one so far in my opinion. It is dull to watch, despite the promising setting, and the identity of the killer becomes very obvious after a while (he is all but shown to the audience). The ending is fairly strong, but cannot save the entire episode. Interesting to see Joan "Miss Marple" Hickson in another mystery production of the 1980s, but her character (like some others) is quite superfluous. *1/2 out of 4.

Frustrating story of school life.

Though mystery is claimed the subject, there's none here. Sure, there's a death, but the laser focus is the tedious school life of employees at a school.

Clearly the producers were more interested in a soap opera with a school background. Even with that, there's far too much emotional nonsense and prolonged focus of the slightest moves.

This could've been edited into a 'Thirty-Minute Theatre'. Maybe a ten minute version.

Not helping my view is just filing through the small collection of 'Waugh on Crime', part of the Thirty Minute Theatre. Excellent in plotting, dialogue and story. This is trash to that.

Poorly plotted and filmed with over-acting, there's no reason to waste time with this.

Very good.

Some definite pedigree in the writer, Antonia Fraser, who gave us Jemima Shaw, Mister Clay, Mister Clay is the most accomplished of the three episodes I have seen thus far.

More a whodunnit style of episode in comparison to the previous two I've seen. The setting of a boy's School is a little different, and it features some zany characters.

It could have been slightly longer run, and explored some of the characters a bit more, but in the time allocated, they crammed a lot in.

A wonderful cast, Charles Kay and Ian Ogilvy of course, but best of all, it features Miss Marple, Joan Hickson.

Very good I thought, 8/10.
