Two men (Nicky and Freddie) and a woman (Casey) pull a series of armed robberies by disguising themselves as police officers and using a fake "detour" sign to lure their victims into secluded areas. They decide to flee the state after killing an uncooperative victim, but they cannot resist pulling an unplanned robbery when a tempting target is spotted at a roadside diner. Casey is forced to commandeer the victim's car and use him as a hostage after the original robbery plan is stymied by a Highway Patrol roadblock. When the victim signals his peril by dropping his wallet onto the road, Dan Mathews and Sergeant Johnson follow the car and ultimately find themselves in an armed conflict with the trio.
