"The Knockout" is one of the most complicated scams I can recall seeing in an episode of "Racket Squad". The mark is a band leader named Terry. He's apparently got a lot of money and meets up with a guy on the train--not realizing that new acquaintance is a crook. After they get talking and strike up a friendship, the new 'friend' lets him know that he knows about a boxer who is deliberately throwing fights to make his promoter rich. Using a fake recording of a fight that it piped into a room, it appears like the guy lost in the round when his friend said he would! So, the crooks actually stage a fight in an arena filled with folks invited to watch a free fight! Then, the hook is set, as Terry bets $50,000 on a boxer who isn't even a real boxer! Unlike most episodes of "Racket Squad", the sucker doesn't go to the cops until long after he was cheated. And so, you do NOT see Captain Braddock march in and arrest everyone like he usually does. I appreciated this, as it was almost like clockwork that he'd do this and throwing off the formula a bit was a good change of pace. A decent episode...and a very complicated scam.
