Written by Roy Clarke, there is still a hangover of some casual sexism with female characters from the previous episode.
It seems Vincent is from a cultured upper class background. He arrives with Nina and Jimmy to his family chateau. Only it has been taken over by the urbane General Von Trenow (Richard Hurndall.) A soldier but not a true believer of Nazism.
That person is SS Obersturmbanfuhrer Lutzig (Philip Madoc) a zealot. He has arrived with orders to find the three people on the run. He has little time for the Von Trenow, he just know that he German soldiers have their uses.
In his sights is Franco. The coarse Italian gamekeeper in Vincent's estate. He greets Vincent as an old friend. He also loudly badmouths Von Trenow, something that has not gone unnoticed with Lutzig.
Von trenow does not want show trial where Franco becomes martyr or cruelly dispose of him. Lutzig has a better idea, release Franco and then get rid off him quietly when he is out of the way.
The series now has a cruel and cunning antagonist in Lutzig. Madoc is dull of vim and vigor. Not realising that the three people he is seeking are right under his nose.
